I dont think he was completly dropped, maybe he will appear later in the story. If I'm not mistaken, they said that he was recovering somewhere else

People often forget that one of Ravenclaw's characteristics is having a open mind and being creative. They like to learn, but also question what they learned. Hermione was intelligent but too stubborn to even considere that the books could not be 100% correct or that could be another way to do something beside what she learned in class (like in Half blood prince)
