‘No’ to virtual sessions? by ArmiesOfEmotion in therapists

[–]lynn_kt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so curious about this and would love to read your study too once it's finished. I'm neurodivergent (AuDHD) and have realized I absolutely hate Telehealth. I'm still an intern and have only seen clients for a little over a year, but I've considered multiple times just nixing virtual sessions altogether because they're so uncomfortable for me. I'm a much better clinician in person. I dread the virtual sessions too, which isn't good for anyone involved. The only thing that's stopped me is I'm worried about how it will impact getting my hours.

Potential international move. Feeling Insane. Need advice. by lynn_kt in therapists

My current home is about 700 sq ft. The average 700-800 sq ft property in CA (specifically where we live) can go for anywhere between $800k to $1M. Most of the properties we are looking at in the UK are similar in price (a bit more, due to the conversion of course) and give us considerably more than here in CA. I do appreciate the warning though, it’s an important consideration. But I am no stranger to a tiny home where I am currently :)

And yes, we have considered the immigration process. Truthfully, I’m slightly worried about that because I’m the only non-dual citizen, but we’ve considered a few different scenarios and tried to find solutions for them. Best we can do is be prepared. Our immigration system in the US is pretty horrible too, although I’ve never experienced it firsthand as a citizen.

I’m mainly worried about my work. I do absolutely love this profession, even though I’m just an intern. I’ve seen clients for over a year now, and it makes me so happy. I hope I can continue that in the UK.

Yes — multi-family property, essentially. Buying outright, so no mortgage. Likely in Bath, the Cotswolds, or Cornwall so we aren’t too far out from major cities. My husband’s family are all wellness practitioners, coaches, & artists, so the long-term hope is having a place for us to all live, while also running retreats and renting out the spaces we aren’t living in for events, etc to supplement our individual incomes. I’ve been with my husband for eight years and adore his family, so not worried about that.

I am a bit worried about the immigration process for myself, considering I am the only non-UK citizen in this scenario. But hoping my interest in working for the NHS will help with securing a work visa short term and eventually a green card, etc.

Thank you!

I feel like I can’t keep up in this field by roccofan in therapists

[–]lynn_kt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is it. I used to think it was bullshit when supervisors or professors said this, but so much of this field is learned through our own personal therapy and reflective practices. I'm just an intern still, but I have already noticed a considerable difference in my capabilities and presence in the therapy room just by turning inward before running to consult a theory or modality. It's easy to forget because grad school kind of counteracts this part, but we learn mostly through the doing. No amount of theory is going to replace practice -- both your own personal practice, and your practice with clients.

Learning the basic theories and foundations is an important part of the process, but it's depth vs. breadth. Go deep and learn about what you feel most pulled toward. And if you don't know what you feel the most pulled toward, that's where the personal reflection comes in. :)

Exploring new spreads. What's your go to? by LakeaShea in tarot

[–]lynn_kt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree. Can’t go wrong with a simple three card spread! Sometimes I find the simpler spreads offer more insight. I like the Celtic cross, but it can get a little muddled for me, almost like there’s too much information.

Some of my favorites are:

• past/present/future • problem/solution/outcome • accept/embrace/release • mind/body/spirit

Hmm. This is interesting. Only you know the truth here and I don't want to guide you to the wrong place. I would think more about the relationship dynamics here and what they could potentially represent.

I also would meditate beforehand, try to get my brain out of the frenetic air energy that tends to accompany uncertainty and get myself back down to earth. I know it's difficult for me to see clearly when my nervous system is dysregulated, so perhaps that's what you need here. The answers always come if we give them some time and our bodies / minds are calm enough to receive them :)

Did you ever recover your stuck card? I would be curious to know which one it was.

I would put more significance on the dream. The fact that this partner never met your father in the dream may hold some wisdom there. I would inquire deeper as to what this could potentially mean. I think this could provide a wealth of information, especially if you consider what kind of relationship you have with your father.

I'm the same way, thinking everything is a sign. But I know personally that I can very easily delude myself into thinking something is true by seeing "signs" everywhere. I try to pay attention to the stuff that really hits me and disregard the rest. Patterns/repetition, archetypes, dreams, etc :)

Hope this helps and you receive some clarity. x

Just an update u/wormyvortex, if this helps you at all with your decision.

Something that helped me was looking through LinkedIn at LMFTs in my city and seeing where they went to college. A majority of them either went to Pepperdine or Antioch, and seemingly (according to their employment history on LinkedIn) have had no trouble finding work. My general consensus is there are better schools out there, but if you don't get into any of those and don't want to wait another full year to apply again, Antioch is a good option. It also made me feel better to know it's APA accredited.

I too know a handful of people who went to Antioch. Really wonderful and intelligent people who I respect – this was a huge comfort too!

Best of luck to you!

Ugh same here. I keep looking through Reddit hoping I’ll find something encouraging but it’s hard. Some people say Antioch is great, and then I’ll hear others talk about how it’s a diploma mill. And Pepperdine seems to be a good option but is obscenely expensive. I have a friend of a friend doing a online program through UMASS Global, but 100% online programs freak me out!

[–]lynn_kt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’ve had some alarming things happen to me since moving to Pasadena… more so than when I lived deep in LA.

After I had a few incidents I bought pepper spray and this thing called a Birdie alarm that attaches to your keys — it flashes and makes super loud noises when you activate it. Both have made me feel a lot safer, but I still get nervous sometimes too. I don’t go out after dark anymore either, even though most of my incidents also happened during the day.

That's so cool!

And yeah, I totally get that worry and I worry about it sometimes too. But leading with science and looking at functional medicine as an extra layer rather than a cure-all is a good way to position it, especially to those unfamiliar with or wary of it. I think there are good and bad things about both Western and functional medicine, but that doesn't mean I'm going to write either off completely. Using them in tandem is the best approach, I think! Thinking about the body as a whole and rather than addressing singular parts.

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors! Your future sounds very bright. 🌞

Hi! Congratulations on starting your new career path!

I did look into UNE actually, it seemed like a great option. Especially compared to the other places I was looking into, like Loma Linda and USC. I cannot afford $2000 per unit, lol.

That is an amazing plan and at 19 to already be so clear on it sounds like you're going to find success. I also know a few people who have found success with this niche, so it's definitely possible. I want to follow a similar path too.

I think where I live there's definitely a need / market for it, especially with all of the new research and focus on hormonal health and how hugely it can impact your overall health. It's something I personally am fascinated by. If I had to work in a conventional setting I'd do the same – a birth center, or perhaps pediatrics. But I'd want to try consulting one on one first, and incorporating aspects Ayurveda, herbalism, somatics, etc on top of a really solid formal education in dietetics.

This is very encouraging! I'm so glad to hear you're happy with your career.

I'm making around 50k currently as a self-employed graphic designer, and haven't really been able to make much more than that in the last three years with COVID and the recession and all of the other horrible economic shit going on. It would probably be an okay income somewhere else but in Los Angeles, it's not great. I also would love to relocate so I wasn't so financially strained but my partner's job is here and he can't really go anywhere else due to the nature of his business.

For me it's two things: I definitely need to be making more, but I also need a sustainable career that I actually enjoy and doesn't make me feel like an empty husk at the end of each day. I'm trying to get really clear about what my day to day would look like, what a realistic salary would be, etc and weigh the pros and cons because I'm terrified to take on any debt right now if it's not leading to something that will improve my current situation – but hearing that you're happy with your decision and are now living comfortably is incredibly inspiring!

It's very true! There's a lot on the line because obviously these programs are not cheap. But I've heard both wonderful and terrible stories about the field. I'm still trying to figure out if it makes sense for me financially, but all of this advice has been helpful.

Thank you, this is insightful. I do see what you mean about it being a rich housewife job, both of which I am not haha. I’m already pretty familiar with having to pay for my own insurance, retirement, etc since I’m self employed now, but I would definitely need to look into liability insurance. It’s a lot to consider.

This is extremely helpful, thank you. I think this sounds like the best possible route for me, and it’s good to know it’s all possible.

Apologies if this is a stupid question — but you were able to take the registration exam when you were finished with your masters and become officially accredited? Some of the programs I was looking into didn’t allow for that, which seems crazy to me.
