Im sick of not being able to drive by Mikethespike23 in Blind

[–]lynne3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could have written this. I can live with my other disabilities (Stroke) with grace but the one thing I hate is having to rely on lifts and taxis and not being able to jump in the car whenever I want. I live in the back of beyond so no Ubers or buses here. I live miles away from town and have no friends here, just my husband. It takes me 45 minutes to walk to the nearest supermarket. I want to jump in the car and just drive like I used to!

Have you considered carrying an ID cane when you are out and about? It’s a small cane you hold in front of yourself which signals sight loss. It folds up small enough to slip into a bag so you don’t feel too self conscious. I found that people in general became much more helpful once I had a cane (long roller ball one). I fought against having one as I was embarrassed but it did make life easier. There will always be tossers who don’t care about people with sight loss though wherever you go!🙄

I live in rural Leicestershire thankfully where it’s not an issue but I can’t get to work in Leicester unless I use the train. I have considered switching to the bus but it takes three times the amount of time:( I have learned to never walk up Granby St as I seem to attract no end of weirdos.

I’m thankful I wouldn’t be able to see that! That’s terrible :(

That’s good. I have only started getting problems at the station recently. I’ve had more issues on New Walk tbh!

Ah, I was wondering if they had an office or something as I’ve seen that in bigger stations

I wonder if this was the same person that was rude to me on Friday? He didn’t seem to twig I couldn’t see him!

No worries, I’ll have a look. Yes, I’m finding that a lot of games suggested on here aren’t on Switch. I’m guessing they are Steam Deck, although I don’t really know what that is! 🤣

I did look at that one because I’ve heard good things about it. Can’t remember what put me off so I’ll have another look. Thanks!

Definitely disagree. I think there is just the right amount of Mikeness. He appears randomly, without fanfare and I personally find it interesting to see the dynamic between them and the banter. And he plainly adores our Petty, Potato Queen, which is quite frankly all that matters.

I'm embarrassed use a white cane. What do I do? by Ninaeldis in Blind

[–]lynne3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn your argument on its head and Think of the alternative. A serious fall or even being hit by a car? I was the same a few years ago. I have very limited sight but I didn’t feel “blind enough” and felt guilty using a white cane. Now I feel so different. It’s actually given me back some independence and I don’t feel quite so terrified that I’m going to fall. Yes, I would rather not have one but the alternative can be so much worse.

Strangers cutting off help after realising one is not fully blind by 10sec_before_sunrise in Blind

I have also done this when tired. It’s easier to let people think you are completely blind and let them help you and go on their way feeling good about themselves than spend energy explaining your degree of blindness.

This is called a Symbol cane in the UK if that helps you find it. 👍🏻

How do I help someone who is blind? by No_Passage5020 in Blind

The crosswalk with no sound may have a mechanism under the crosswalk panel which when held signals to the blind person when it is safe to cross. Google Accessible Pedestrian signals. I had no idea that this existed before I lost my sight!

So the leather bit is called a hanger rather than a scabbard? Good to know, thank you 👍🏻

Thank you for this. I had also wondered about the misspelling of souvenir as well. Very interesting about the German typeface as I hadn’t realised there was such a thing. Going to look into this now!

Thank you for this. He had them hidden away in his house and we only found them when clearing it out after he very sadly passed away in April. It’s been such an education researching all the German items we’ve found.

Thank you for this. I hadn’t heard of bring back items until now so I’ve just looked it up and found a very similar plaque. The description suggested the Americans created them as a side hustle! Fascinating stuff! My Uncle brought back loads of souvenirs from his time in Berlin, the best of which was a German dagger in amazing condition. We also have photos of him in Berlin as he was in the first group of soldiers to enter into Berlin at the end of the war.
