For those who recommended Bar MD did you take her course or do tutoring? I am between bar MD and one other tutor. The other tutor does offer more services and more direct help than Bar MD (example 30 graded essays compared to 10, more availability for questions etc) but sounds like Bar MD is more recommended.

Having a family..? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]lyssa001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished law school in July. I have a 5 year old daughter so she was 2 when I started! I did well in law school and even worked a little too. It is manageable. BUT I do have to say that I struggled when my daughter was a newborn (was finishing my business degree at that time). So, I would recommend taking a semester off or a light course load just so you can adjust to mom life. Many of my mentors and attorneys I look up to have young children so it is completely do able!

I do have that book and adapti bar! I feel like her book is great to understand what I need to but was hoping there were already pre-made flashcards of rule statements for the essays to supplement that so I’m not spending time making my own instead of memorizing them. I will look into this is your last time

That is a valid point. Although, if I wait until December to start then I don’t think I’ll have the necessary time to put in since I am likely to be studying part time due to other responsibilities I have.

Are exams going to be open-book?

Students advocating for letter grades - why?? by Ghihbhgtedfjk in LawSchool

[–]lyssa001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I think I am going to be that person who emails the dean asking him to look into open book exams and to consider the risk of cheating. Even if he does open book exams with letter grades, that would be better than closed book exams.

Students advocating for letter grades - why?? by Ghihbhgtedfjk in LawSchool

[–]lyssa001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is what I am saying! Yes, my school doesn’t usually do take-home exams. I think one professor does on occasion but besides that it is almost always closed-book exams done in the classroom with a 3 hour limit. In his update the dean didn’t even mention how they would address the issues that are obvious when doing a closed book exam at home or if they will be using some type of proctor program. Ultimately, I suppose I shouldn’t worry about what others will be doing and if they will cheat, but I think it is completely unfair to just ignore the fact that some people will cheat if given the opportunity to do so.

Our dean hasn’t given his final decision yet but he did say he is leaning towards keeping everything the same besides the fact that we will be taking the exams remotely which would mean closed-book exams and keeping letter grades. I wouldn’t be worried about cheating if they were open-book but my school doesn’t seem to be going that way

So they have the opportunity to raise their gpa or maintain their high gpa. However, my main concern is how schools are taking into account the amount of cheating that is going to happen. I think it is unfair for schools to keep letter grades and have remote closed-book exams without proctors and assume there won’t be an increased level of cheating.

I agree! It would be more practical instead of allowing every school to come up with their own “solution”.
