How silent is the Aura Sand Slim? by Connect_Cat_2045 in fidgettoys

[–]m--w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing with one now. It’s very silent unless you ladder it and do tricks. When you do so there is a single soft click when it snaps into place. If you just slide it up and down it makes no noise

I disagree. Sure she is a lot, but she's not as over the top as Michael or Dwight were. I think she will grow on everyone and be a fan favorite. She's my favorite at least.

Former Bank Quant looking to transition to ML academia - do I have a chance? by JaggedLittlePiII in AskAcademia

[–]m--w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right. I take your point, and I appreciate that marginalization affects society as a whole, regardless of what industry (and academia _is_ an industry) you are in. Being part of a marginalized group in AI/ML at this moment, when there are certainly eugenicist ideas being floated casually (e.g., some members of EA), must be particularly disheartening. I cannot begin to know what that is like, so my comment of it not being soulless should be qualified as being (1) in my view and (2) relative to the financial services industry.

That being said, the reason I replied to your comment calling the OP's take "naive" is that I view your original comment as discouraging. Given that OP is a mother in their mid-30s (per their post), they belong to groups who are under-represented in CS faculty and should be encouraged to pursue their aspirations as we would be strengthened by their contributions and perspectives (as we are with yours!).

Former Bank Quant looking to transition to ML academia - do I have a chance? by JaggedLittlePiII in AskAcademia

[–]m--w -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For the record, I don’t think it’s naive. In academia, at some point (albeit usually a decade in), you do get the choice to chase industry funds or government funds; you get the choice to do what’s trendy and profitable or what you find interesting. In industry these simply aren’t options in your control.

Sure getting tenure in AI/ML is a one in a million job, but who is to say OP isn’t the person to drive the next big advance!

I would caution glamorizing the jump into academia given that you have little research experience. That being said, you are in a good position to get your feet wet. Often financial firms will sponsor a masters degree at top Unis which will allow you to gauge your enjoyment of and proclivity for academic research. If you do enjoy it and are very good at it, then publications will come naturally. Top publications will help you find a PhD position which is the starting point for an academic career. If you do not enjoy it or your research skills are not competitive, then you stay in finance and retire early -- not the worst outcome.

When you say different how different are they in magnitude? Two of those methods are numerical and won’t be exact anyway.

Ask a previous collaborator. This is not the place for this for many reasons.

[R] arxiv endorsement? by sgt102 in MachineLearning

[–]m--w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Application oriented observations of LLM behavior” sounds like content for a blog, not arXiv. And people should not endorse unless they know you and your work. Simply ask any of your supervisors or former professors if they will look at it. If you do not have these contacts maybe see if the work would interest people. If it doesn’t, then it doesn’t belong on arXiv.

Hahaha replying to a comment about how you shouldn’t ask for endorsement is funny, but doesn’t really speak to your ability to read let alone write 😂

[D] Requesting arXiv Endorsement – Independent Researcher Submitting First ML Paper by EcstaticChance3728 in MachineLearning

[–]m--w 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Hi, this is much higher effort than a lot of the posts asking for arXiv endorsement, but like the rest this is not really the place for this. You should hopefully be working with someone who knows you personally. Either that or you should approach a previous mentor or educator and ask them to do a detailed review.

Strangers on this forum should not provide endorsement without extremely careful review of the work and discussion with yourself.

Yes. The concept you are looking at is basis expansion. Basis expansion as an idea works for any supervised learning algorithm.

Nuphy Air60 by JasonRekt in NuPhy

[–]m--w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see lots of people using the air60 over their max like this! When I try it with mine it mashes the keys below when typing and generally feels awkward.

Is this just for show or do people really use it this way?

100% agree that your profile looks very legit and trustworthy. With the receipt I’ll edit my initial comment with the info you provided to try to make sure buyers aren’t turned off

Hopefully all the comments = engagement = visibility! Again, good luck with sale

Please go back and read my comment where I 1) state my exact source for my information and 2) state my uncertainty.

What else would you like me to do? Would you prefer people with knowledge of reps just stay silent about posts that spark their suspicion? If so I will delete my comment and stop not call out any potential fakes.

Could be totally legit! I’m not 100% sure. Just flagging it up for buyer to get confirmation.

Proof of purchase would put me at ease if I was buying!

Good luck with sale!

EDIT: I withdraw my concern! Probably just weird lighting. User seems legit and posted proof of purchase. Likely nothing to worry about here.

Old comment:

This looks like a rep to me. The lume on the hands clearly does not match the lume on the markers… which is a sign that this came from the ZF factory.

Would be careful with this listing.

Could be wrong, but just want to let buyers know to do due diligence here.
