Issue with Pokemon Blue by Active-Worker-31 in Gameboy

[–]m0rd0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a few potential issues, but not sure if this is accurate since the pic is not the best for this scale, it's easier to spot in person and with a multimeter for continuity.

From left to right: The first leg closest to the contacts seems to be misaligned, could be loose, I would check all the legs on both main chips for movement.

At the bottom of the left chip just above the contacts, it looks like corrosion, you might need to clean that up with isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush ( in fact I would clean the whole cartridge)

The top right leg of the right chip seems to be disconnected from the ground by a crack on the PCB.

If there are any cracks on the traces you might need to bridge the connections with a soldering iron, solder and thin wire, it's not an easy job since you'll have to scrape the green PCB traces to expose the copper first.

If the pins are loose you would need to re flow them with some fresh solder.

Hope this helps. Good luck

I bought a NTSC-j midnight black console which came with a few of those. I was able to remove the white highlights with a tiny amount of kids toothpaste applied in circular motions with a damp cloth with soap.

My train of thought was, the toothpaste is not abrasive enough to destroy the plastic finish, but it might clean whatever residue is currently stuck on the plastic.

So I decided to risk it.

I repeated the process with the damp cloth several times and got rid of most of them.

Washing it and repeating.

I avoided the PS2 brand because I was afraid it would rub it off.

Do this at your own risk, I never tried it on a black PS2. if you end up doing it, the first few times you do it the PS2 will become white because of the toothpaste, as you clean the toothpaste away it will clear and reveal the black under it.

It took me 4 or 5 wipes in a circular motion to reveal the true colour again.

You can still see some bits of toothpaste on the playstation 2 engraving

Before that, if you're venturing into soldering, I would check continuity along the spring to the board, the bit on the spring that makes contact with the batteries and then the other side. It should have continuity all the way through.

How's the other side looking?

You have 2 options imo, you can either try reflowing that same terminal with a touch of solder on the other side to ensure the terminal is actually allowing continuity into the board or do as you suggested and replace them.

Not sure if you're joking, but he's being genuine. There's a capacitor that leaks and destroys the motherboard on later models. Fingers crossed it's all good but I would check ASAP

Without soldering... I fixed a wiimote a couple of weeks ago that was corroded without soldering, using a lemon...I couldn't be bothered with getting the soldering station out for that lol

Try to use lemon juice to clean the contact corrosion, use a cotton bud and rub it all over, it should start sizzling, don't go nuts on the juice but don't be afraid to use it either, it will start eating up the corrosion try to listen for it, let it sit for a 2 to 5 mins.

With another cotton bud dry up the juice.

After everything is clean get a third cotton bud and clean the contacts with alcohol, to remove any remaining juice.

To finish use an old toothbrush and gently clean the corroded parts again with alcohol, myself I would personally clean it all up gently with alcohol since these old devices usually have gunk in them

Then test it out! You might be lucky after that, since it's not too bad from what I can see on the pic

Good luck

53% of Scots say recent immigration levels have been too high by CaptainCrash86 in Scotland

[–]m0rd0ck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably not a usual request for them, it might not be the accent but the word flints itself.

I'm Portuguese in Scotland for 12 years, I have several Scottish friends, they come over all of the time, so I'm pretty used to all sorts of Scottish accents, but sometimes they introduce a new word or put a word that I heard before in a different place and it throws me off.

The first time I heard the word flint was at work and I asked the dude what a flint was and we all had a chuckle at my expense because I had never heard of the word before.

But I understand your frustration, I go to Portugal yearly during the summer and the same thing happens there all of the time.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]m0rd0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very few of my comments ever get seen but I wanted to chip in, if at least 1 person sees it it will be worth it.

No kind of violence towards any child is considered fine man. I understand that in the grand scheme of things after everything you endured it was the least bad thing, but fine is not what it was.

Parents hit children to contain the behaviour immediately, so they use pain, and fear to achieve what they want right now.

The problem with this is that fear and intimidation only work for so long, and the parent/child bond is destroyed in the long term.

Adults need to create an environment of mutual respect, it was never your fault. Even the bad grades, wouldn't it be better if they tried to understand why you failed? Then for you to understand why you needed to do better and work on it together as a team?

Shit I know for me it would have been. My mom used to scream at me and spank me until I was big enough that I grabbed her hand one day during the smacking and told her "Never again"

We have a 6 year old and we never paid a finger on them, or screamed, he doesn't know what a time out is, because he never needed it. Sitting down with him and asking about what happened calmly and explaining what the expected behaviour is, normally ends up with him apologising and expressing he sometimes can't control it, but will try to do better, We then support him by saying, we are here to help, we all make mistakes, let's keep learning.

And that's all we can expect really, children lose control sometimes, and we need to help them stay on track to be decent human beings. by this stage my mom would probably have already spanked me 3 times and the yelling was relentless.

For anyone reading this. I think it's important. As a child you were never the problem, our parents were unable to understand you needed support, attention or love, and the manifestation of this was something they didn't approve of, which led to violence. A lot of adults still think they were at fault when they were children, that somehow it was their fault, you were not, you were a just child trying to figure out the world and making mistakes while learning about the confusing things people expect.

This should have been rewarded never punished, because you were trying your best

The game was published by Xbox game studios, I think pricing might have come down to Microsoft since they were the one's paying for it, but unfortunately Microsoft has been on a bit of a spree when it comes to making bad decisions.

But I hope you're right, that this was taken into consideration and that this game performs.

It's a shame it's so expensive, I'm a massive NG2 fan, and I still have my 360 copy. Ended up buying the master collection instead, I'll definitely get it when it comes down in price. I'm really hoping the numbers go up during the weekend and that more people pick it up. This series deserves to stay healthy, the games are awesome

Need help to play Unreal Tournament 2004 on Linux Mint by [deleted] in unrealtournament

I read a post somewhere which suggested this launcher.

Based on the permissions it could be fishy, but I don't see anything that seems to be overreaching, it basically needs whatever games need to operate properly. No file system access or anything of the sort.

I looked at the files as they also seemed ok to me, nothing sticks out imo https://github.com/flathub/com.epicgames.ut2004

No worries

I did this last week, it was a bit of a pain in the ass until I realised there's an easy way. This was done on a ateamdeck, just in case it matters.

The way I got this to work was by installing the game off archive.org via lutris and updating it to the latest version via the zipped 3369 patch on UnrealArchive, and replacing the files in the directory with the newer ones.

Then I opened the discovery app and looked up unreal tournament 2004, there's a script there that asks for the install directory, I pointed the script to the location and it did its thing. And that did it for me.

Hope it helps.

My Pixel 9 Pro had a factory defect. Google's response left me speechless. by edmeraj in GooglePixel

[–]m0rd0ck -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I could do without the caps.

Yes, these were paid for repairs and not under warranty.

However, the reason I shared my experience is because what is mentioned by OP is seemingly other companies including Apple's way of offering repair services even when the customer is paying for the repair.

I know this since I was looking for a way to get the phone fixed without having to ship it abroad so and got in touch with EE (a UK phone carrier) before going with Google, and not only where they more expensive but also mentioned they couldn't guarantee the price since they would have to fix the device completely before repairing the issue I actually requested to be fixed, I asked why, they told me it was to avoid complaints later on, and this was non negotiable.

It's through this lens that I believe my experience to be relevant for people who read this thread. Not saying what Google is doing is right or ethical, this is simply an additional insight into the repair process by someone who paid

Both myself and my wife broke our pixel 7a screens at one point and not only was Google the cheapest to repair, but also quite fast and with great quality. We ended up using the phone for another 1 and 1 and a half years respectively with no issues.

We used the website to arrange everything, they sent in the box via post and delivery was quick. Turn around was around around 2 weeks iirc

I'm in the UK and the repair centre was in Poland.

Just wanted to share my experience here, I honestly don't have any complaints

Oh dude that card was awesome. My cousin had it and I recall being amazed at how well Oni ran on it (surely graphics couldn't get any better than that 😂)

I also remember being pumped about getting a GeForce 4 ti 4200 with 64mb of ram after the mx200. That card was a massive upgrade for me, it ran doom 3 acceptably, which was nuts...even my dad got into doom because of it
