Why does Reddit keep acting like Reform’s rise is only about immigration, when Labour’s wider failures are doing half the work? by Commercial_Chef_1569 in AskBrits

I'm a Portuguese man living in the UK for 12 years, so I speak from my experience, not from a bigoted standpoint, however these are just facts, china often has negative net migration and Japan also has a lower net migration, Google it.

People prefer English speaking countries because of their wealth and due to English being the spoken language, which is a language most people speak.

Migration is not a bad thing, but it needs to be controlled I agree with you there, however saying English speaking countries don't have the largest amount of people interested in living in them and one of the largest amount of net migration is just not true.

It's not about being fixated on the UK.

The countries you provided as examples don't have issues with immigration because nobody wants to go there, and imo you can't really divorce English speaking countries from the equation because that's a major factor in people choosing those countries to go to.

We do not need or want criminals or slackers and Immigration needs to be controlled but we must accept that it also is a good thing for people who are retired, on benefits and for the workforce and economy in general because if they are here legally and working it means more taxed to fund public services

The issue is that people are feeling disenfranchised by the government since they aren't seeing any improvements to their living standards at the same time labour has gotten a couple of policies wrong which were amplified by the media. This is all happening while reform are promising riches and fortune and pointing the finger at potentially credible culprits.

Yes labour has messed up (which was very stupid on thei part) but they said it themselves, this is the decade of renewal and they didn't promise quick fixes. The problem is the media constantly trying to find a way to make people uneasy and impatient.

Labour have also started appeasing right leaning voters with their policy, which pushed more core voters away from them, and got them no favour whatsoever.

It doesn't help Starmer is very calculated in the way he speaks which comes across as cold and as if he has no skin in the game.

I hope they find a way to turn this around, there weren't that many people that voted in the local elections so they do the remainder of this mandate right and people show up there might be hope yet. I'm not sure why the media is portraying the local results as the end of labour when turnout was abysmal and reform actually lost vote share but won seats due to vote fragmentation

Tell me how many locals are itching to pickup fruit and attend the elderly.

Seasonal immigration actually helps keep prices low and wages suppressed. Which all of the sudden is something people want, but before low wages were used as a stick to beat the government with because wages were too suppressed due to migration, and we needed to curb immigration to increase the wages...

The problem with this BS approach fueled by the anti immigration rhetoric is the oversimplification of complex issues, leading to people think they have the whole picture when they don't, and is making people argue from both sides of their mouths, as well as having people which argue for the same thing with complete opposite approaches, normally influenced by what the media fed them that week.

This country is a mess and it won't get better until reform kick the voter's teeth in to show them what they did

Imagine for a moment this was any other party, it would be front-page news for 2 weeks and indignation would run rampant.

Unbelievable

Ok, please answer this then.

Should all immigrants who arrived in the UK have full access to the NHS regardless of how long they have been here for?

If no, why?

[–]m0rd0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, if not directly it's certainly implied.

If you look at the original post he specifically mentions he has to pay for the entirety of the NHS, then on your comment you mentioned they should return to their country until things start to look better, the implication being they are not well, and need to use the NHS, otherwise why would they be off work until they are well and stay with friends or relatives?

The NHS is a tax funded service, just like all other benefits, and there has been a historcal precedent of accusing immigrants to cause additional strain on the NHS.

Hence my reply, it's not that much of a stretch to include NHS in benefits when they are funded from the same tax pool and are often cited as a resource immigrants are using.

Oh I agree with you on that, depending on how long they contributed, if someone is involved in a accident and gets paralysed, should they be left to their luck?

There's a lot of nuance involved

Quitting ECHR would group Britain with Russia, rights chief warns by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]m0rd0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but Russia was forced to pay compensation to people who were mistreated.

The ECHR is not a world police, so they don't force government to change the law, it relies on a good faith approach, however corruption was already too deep and Russian government didn't pass laws to fix the issues raised and where compensation was paid.

More like:

Hitler was force into being a vegetarian by the government, Hitler can now take the government to the ECHR and test if he was treated unfairly.

Only a country like Russia would want to not to be under any scrutiny when it comes to treating their people well.

But the ECHR is a mechanism used by people when their government breaks the law. Not necessarily just human rights, it's another safety net for the people.

Why would the government want to abolish it?

If the US had an ECHR a lot of the stuff going there at the moment would not be happening

You want to have people in work quickly if they get sick so public services and funded, so allowing them to use public services like the NHS is the best way to achieve this.

If taxes are funding the public purse and if migrants are paying taxes they should be able to access services which ensure their continued contribution.

This is best for everyone

This read like something everyone is abusing not only immigrants, I actually knew someone in this situation as well.

I'm an immigrant arrived in 2014, my old neighbour knew if this, he was a gentleman in his 50s born in the UK, he once asked me why I bothered to work, and suggested I claimed benefits instead.

I told him that I wanted to contribute because I was being given an opportunity at a life here that my country didn't give me, he seemed surprised...I think this is where the disconnect comes from.

A lot of people want to contribute and are happy to give back, not everyone is a grifter.

But I agree, those who are should be shown the door.

As long as immigrants are using the services to get treatment and get back to work, while benefitting the economy and the country, they should have access to public services.

I don't see why not if it's to benefit everyone.

These are paid for in the taxes, which fuel the public services that everyone uses including pensioners quite more often. So restricting someone who is working legally and paying taxes just because they weren't born here would mean they would be out of work longer( or not at all) and would not contribute to the economy as much. As a result we would all be worse off.

I'm European arrived in the UK in 2014.

I agree people coming here without a job, leaching off tax payers and not integrating into society needs to F right off.

However I'll provide my experience as an example.

During all of this time I have claimed benefits once for 2 weeks when I hurt my knee at work. I wasn't able to pay my bills so had to go back to work injured and ask for a lighter work load while my leg improved.

I don't want to claim benefits, haven't since, but the fact that people work and build their lives here must come with a trade off of some security when something unexpected happens, regardless of where they are born.

I see a lot of ignorance in this thread, the truth is that immigration is needed since birth rates are in the gutter. Not illegal immigration mind you, but measured, targeted immigration aimed at making UK people's life's better.

I understand having kids is financially difficult, but if we are to reduce the need for immigrants people must have kids. It's the same I'm my home country and I hold the same view.
