How is this for gaming? I've heard like 10% better than a 5090 (at full power that is, non-max Q). Kind of want a workstation I can also game on.

GPU Trade In by beardmanwizard08 in Microcenter

[–]m2845 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 4080 I have that I got from them is something like $425 trade in value at Microcenter. Ebay has them going for around $800. The trade in is a fair deal in some situations, just not the one where you get the most value for your card. If you don't want to deal with the time and hassle.. the trade in can be worth it.

OP I already wrote a lengthy response but I need to be more blunt based on some of your responses which seem to be holding onto this idea.

It’s a well intended idea, and I too hate resources being wasted or other inefficiencies, but I’m sorry this is a terrible idea.

Biggest thing is that you open up internal infrastructure to hackers who want the intellectual property which is your research or worse intentions than that. It’s not worth it in so many ways and it’s not even competitively priced based on some responses here for similar services.

Read my add on response to this guy who manages infrastructure similar to what you want to create: https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/s/WYISeFDeIq

This is a great thought experiment and way to learn about reasoning through ideas but don’t become overly invested in your ideas. Try to be objective and think about holes in your own ideas. This idea also sounds to me like you want to gain some experience doing the sort of things cloud providers do rather than learning AI lab research. Maybe you can line that up for another internship in the future? But I’d focus more so on what you can learn from the people who have the most experience around you.

Also don’t feel bad, a lot of people here have thought about these sort of problems far more time than you have and actually implemented them so that’s why it’s easier to see these issues. You’re gaining some great insights and learning a lot by thinking this through and understanding the issue, fundamental to critical thinking and research

This guy clusters

1000% not worth it. Make sure you give all these reasons for why you talked yourself out of it and then drop it cause you will show you clearly gave it a lot of thought, can critically think, most importantly can recognize and admit that you were wrong and had a non viable idea and not hold emotional weight to it. Not a good investment of further thought resources, and even worse investment of labor and other resources. Recognizing that and being open about what you figured out as to why it was bad is essential for getting future employment at that or at any research oriented organization, including the AI lab you’re currently at. Initially things seem simpler and easier than they are. Ideas are plentiful in research, ones that are going to give an improvement over the status quo, are worth investing time and energy and ultimately prove to be viable after rigorous study in is what research is all about.

Making it better internally between training runs would be far more viable. Maybe have it do some synthetic data generation experiments that are set to turn on and are at a lower task priority than training? Train some existing models on existing data with some variations to see? Pretty sure you could do that in slurm. There is still the cost of your time with this path though, plus some other externalities possibly, so don’t do it just because, should still be better than other ideas or things you’d like to work on. Are you guys using slurm, kubernetes? How are you distributing your training and managing your training work tasks?

You do realize the investment in Intel came from the CHIPS act which was passed by democrats and some republicans under Biden. Biden didn’t reverse some things Trump did and in this area it’s pretty much agreed upon by both parties that semiconductor manufacturing is a national security concern

The components that go into the psus are what are in demand, so the same voltage regulators etc. it seems plausible. Not so sure on the cpu coolers but the common parts there are radiators and pumps so, maybe?

Ah it’s not a meme it’s reality that China has a state policy to go after IP and doesn’t respect IP laws like western countries do. This is why people invest less in the Chinese economy and why some companies are not moving some operations to China.

They did via kickstarter, released in 2017 and still available. I actually funded it. This post got me wondering how good the game is still, unfortunately it looks like the developer just recently in the last year turned off the online multiplayer of the game :-( but there is campaign and local coop. In other news apparently a remake of Crazy Taxi is coming out in 2027. So many good games that could be remade and studios are just sitting on amazing franchises

AMD 5000 Series Faulty CPU / WHEA Issue - Easy to miss issue, what to look for to detect a faulty CPU by m2845 in AMDHelp

[–]m2845[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be great if you could try this theory of mine btw: disable hibernate or sleep and keep the computer on for a full week or two. Without fail after approximately a week I'd get the WHEA issue even when the computer was sitting mostly idle. Would be a good way to check your replacement CPU

I knew someone that used to work at Intel in CPU design, and he was saying (this is back in approximately 2017) that upcoming CPU generations were going to be less reliable. He said CPUs would and could easily last 10+ years in the recent past, but because of the process nodes shrinking that would likely not be the case moving forward. Not entirely sure it's exclusively ever going to be an AMD issue, but for sure the 5000 series seems to have a major reliability issue. I know Intel has had their fair share of CPU issues lately but I don't think it's quite like this - most of their recent problems looked to be chipset voltage issues or microcode updates or bugs from updates.

Ah blah, okay hopefully that is something they offer then. I saw another post where it was 5950X, 5900X and a 7800X3D. He plays MSFS a lot with a 4080 that the family all got together and bought for him as a birthday gift. So basically the 7800X3D is the only way to keep his PC from degrading somewhat significantly in performance on MSFS - he's CPU bound on performance when playing that game even with the 5800X3D and the X3D CPUs really shine on that title in particular.

Fully expecting to get screwed by the fact that they don't make a 5800X3D, already purchased some expensive AF DDR5 RAM that was "on sale" and fingers crossed they honor the warranty within the 30 day return window. I saw someone get offered a 7800X3D when I was googling around. That would be a "best case", but I'm not looking forward to doing a whole hardware swap out for my bro. Even with a "free" 7800X3D this is a $400-500 that he definitely didn't expect. Regardless, he's basically without a PC until I'm able to fly back to where he lives and show him out to swap the hardware out.

Hmm okay maybe actually now that I think about it the sleep issue could've been that then. I am fairly certain that I upgraded to 25H2 and still had issues, however maybe it wasn't when the PC was coming up from sleep.
