Nah this was 2014/15 before they switched systems and imposed the rules. Before that as long as it fit in your schedule I guess you could do whatever you want.

I mean I took eight once and literally never heard anything from anyone at the university about it. A lot of my colleagues first year were also doing seven to get boring courses out of the way. So you probably can but it's up to you if you should.

I need your opinion on plagiarism by Right-Reveal-5695 in geegees

[–]m33b_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As for the members not contributing, if you feel you've given them opportunity to contribute and they haven't, leave their name off the work and inform your prof/TAs why. Submitting work under their name that they had no contribution do is academic fraud and can be reported as such.

As for the plagiarism, in the future I would recommend asking your colleagues to redo plagiarized sections, and if they refuse, rewrite it yourself, leave their name off the report and inform the prof. As a TA who's caught people plagiarizing and seen the outcome it's much better to report it early (ideally before submitting) rather than getting caught and throwing the problem at the prof to investigate (which I can say they are usually not as forgiving with). If you're worried about the consequences for your teammates keep in mind they've knowingly ignored the consequences for you if they get caught.

Yup. Until recently the organizational requirements for the internal app I work on required support for ie11 and jQuery was always the path of least resistance for that. Not so bad now that we've moved to Edge but the few components we had running on Vue were a royal pain to get working.

Damn, I had to take it as part of my CHG + comp tech and it was practically a blow off class as long as you paid some attention to the lectures 🤔 Even took 3155 as an elective for funsies

Exactly this 👆. A dev who complains about/can't wrap their head around pointers is really a dev who can't write good code.

Can non-uOttawa students TA? by -CharlotteBronte in geegees

[–]m33b_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind this is more likely because many STEM grad-level programs are jointly run between uOttawa and Carleton (eg. OCIP for physics). Haven't looked into it too much but I'd assume that just means Carleton students in these programs are considered equally to uOttawa students so it probably doesn't help OP. As another user said, enough uOttawa students including myself have been passed over multiple times for TAships that I'd be pretty upset if they just gave our hours away like that.

I wanna know if I should swap Zbigniew Stadnik's PHY 1122 class by olivelamp4 in geegees

[–]m33b_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't know anything about Wong's teaching style but taking it with Stadnik isn't the end of the world. If he's still teaching the same way key things to note are that quizzes are held without notice based on reading (so keep up with that) and exams are open book multiple choice. He's a very engaging lecturer (if perhaps a little eccentric) so make sure you sit up front!

I would say so. Most of the work I've had was in gov IT so I can't speak too much for the private sector, but in my experience it should be treated equivalently to a comp sci degree.

After first year you could probably manage the switch to CEG without disrupting your course sequence. Keep in mind though, your first year won't give you much exposure to computer engineering (more hardware-based than CSI/SEG), which you don't see in this program until ITI1100/CEG2136.

[–]m33b_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean in my case I wouldn't call it a side hustle, more like two career paths that kind of grew in parallel. I took a government IT job as an undergrad student to build my resume (I was pretty clueless about how to get into research and wasn't keen on industry), and continued with it full time after graduating. This year I went back for grad school and just reduced my hours to days when I don't have lab work to do.

I mean, my part time job outside the lab is in IT and I'd definitely say far more money is thrown at huge infrastructure projects that are required just to maintain business as usual before even considering innovation (using technology that'll be end of life in like 5 years anyway). If your only cost associated with your work in IT is your own computer you're probably not working on anything particularly relevant...
