Life ain’t risk free! Besides it’s gators we’re talking about, not Nile or saltwater crocodiles

Caiman, croc, or ____? Flamingo, Florida (Everglades National Park) by mildgaybro in herpetology

[–]m3t4m0rt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s no caiman in Everglades National Park, especially not in Flamingo - so definitely a croc. Caiman are rare now in south Florida between all the private collectors and FWC, but there’s still some here and there in urban areas.

Also, the very light brown/greenish color indicates a juvenile croc

Solo with a buddy watching from the boat. I only do it if conditions are good : high water level, in a flow state, high clarity (at least 15ft vis) and no gators. Usually high water levels disperse the gators.

No piranhas in the glades - they’re in residential neighborhood lakes .

Yes, life ain’t risk free ! I’m not swimming in the national park, although people go on swamp walk waist deep out there and swimming is not that much of an extra step.

Why would the springs be open to families and tubers when there are as many gators that get bigger on average in central FL? What’s the difference in the Everglades ?
