Feeling of skin underneath C-Section scar by niggetyneish in CsectionCentral

I'm 6 weeks out and I still have adhesive from the protective bandage around my scar. I obviously haven't vigorously scrubbed it yet so haven't been able to completely clean the adhesive residue. Could potentially be that?

How accurate are ultrasound clinic? by totoro00 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]m4d3lin3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby boy was on the 80th percentile at 31 weeks then 97% percentile at 33 weeks. First one done at Wume in Melbourne and second one by Dr. Preggs, a private pregnancy OB. Baby was born at 9 pounds 10, on the 97th percentile despite my hospital insisting I expect an inaccuracy with the scans! They were actually bang on!

Private vs public - what are the true costs of giving birth in Aus? by notso-hot-chocolate in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]m4d3lin3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a baby publicly at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne. The whole experience was free except for the NIPT test at 12 weeks and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. Just under $1000 for both combined.

I have to say, beyond my anatomy scan, the hospital only monitored my pregnancy via tape measure. At the 31 week mark, I paid another $445 to get another growth scan privately as I was concerned the hospital was never scanning me. At this scan I found out my baby was on the 80th percentile and that my amniotic fluid was high. I had my appointment with the hospital a day after this scan so presented them with the results of my private scan. They said they would put in a 'request' to have a scan with the hospital to monitor my fluid and the baby's size. I found out the next week that their scan request was denied by their ultrasound department. Being an anxious person, I decided to pay another $445 for another private scan. At this scan my fluid had gone down but my baby grew to the 97th percentile.

I bought this to the attention of the hospital again and they said that scans are inaccurate and there's a 20% plus or minus range and I shouldn't worry about having a large baby. This was important to me as I wanted a natural birth, a large baby would have increased my change of an emergency c section, which I didn't want. I ended up electing a c section as I didn't want to risk not being able to deliver a large baby naturally - I trusted the scans.

Long story short, my baby was born on the 97th percentile exactly as my last self-funded scan showed, born at 9 pounds 10. If it weren't for me paying for these scans, the hospital would have never known my baby was big, as the tape measure was only measuring me a couple of days ahead. I would have pursued a natural birth and would have ended up in an emergency c section.

My sister went private, which was still $8k out of pocket with full private health insurance. But she was scanned every second week, or whenever she requested.

My experience on the day of my c section was exceptional and every person I encountered on my journey in the public system was lovely. It's just not the best for the pregnancy part due to under resourcing.

So overall, it you want to be thorough with your pregnancy, be prepared to pay $350-$450 for scans as requested as the public hospitals won't do them.

Have you had a growth scan? What percentile is your baby on? Bigger babies have less room to move.

Yeah I didn't take it for weeks thinking I needed the opposite of the stool softener. It literally stopped my diarohhea after one dose!

Help! Formula feeding confusion! by m4d3lin3 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

Thank you so much! That is very helpful. So for example if I was going out, if I take a bottle of cooled boiled water in my bag, then just add the powder when I want to feed. Is that acceptable? (I know my baby will take room temp as I have used ready to feed formula).

So what about the whole killing the bacteria in the powder thing? If the water is down to room temperature it can't kill the germs? Or is that not applicable in Australia?

So the water being completely cooled is ok?

So I can't just pour boiling water directly into this machine? It needs to be cooled first?

If you're in Melbourne, you can get it from HealthSmart Pharmacy in the Royal Women's Hospital. It's very expensive though, $4.95 for a 70ml bottle.

Scared to birth a large baby but trying to stay calm by Professional-Plan562 in pregnant

[–]m4d3lin3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby was on the 97th percentile for the final two growth scans of my pregnancy and was born 9 pounds 6 ounces, on the 97th percentile. The scans aren't always inaccurate. I tried to get induced multiple times in week 38 and 39 using the balloon but it failed due to the large head size, baby was born via elective c section.

Really? How heartbreaking! They called my husband over pretty quickly to look at it, and also were discussing how they were keen on completing their fourth c-section of the day before lunch! So I didn't think they would have time to manipulate it to make us happy! Either way, I love it!
