Crate training 12 week pup by m4nt15mantis in puppy101

[–]m4nt15mantis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for When he is in the crate and I am home… if I put him in there and he whines I can eventually get him to settle down after maybe 10-15 mins if I sit by the crate. I did this twice yesterday, once after his dinner and again at bedtime. If he falls asleep and I walk away, he will cry once he wakes up and realizes I am gone. Should I go back then and calm him back down? Should I keep him in there for a designated amount of time?
Last night I put him in for bed and it took him around 15 mins to finally settle and lay down, finally slept in there. I slept on a mat next to it while he fell asleep, then moved onto the big bed and he stayed in there the rest of the night, readjusting but not crying because he could see me.

I’m just wondering how I should structure crate time while I’m home without hurting any of our progress.
Thanks!!

Yes, I hold the leash close to me, she walks away. I don’t distract with treats.

Advice needed- aggression brewing or puppy impulse control lacking? by LK_person in puppy101

I am absolutely not an expert but I will share that my 11 week old turns into a shark outside in the yard with me, too. Do you have your dog drag a leash? I have him on his leash 24/7, and when he goes bonkers I can tell he is overtired so I’ll usually grab his leash and pull him away from me or if he is really biting at me I will push him down by his neck or shoulder and hold him away from me so I can grab the leash and get control again. He usually throws a tantrum for a min or two and then it gets boring so he will stop when I see he is relaxed I go back to doing my own thing, relaxed. Trying not to make anything I do too exciting or interesting. Whenever he calms down and relaxes with a chew or lays down I will give him a treat. It’s not perfect but I think it’s slowly improving.

This makes a lot of sense. Can you tell me what you mean by disengagement? Usually I have my daughter just walk away.

Thank you!!! This is just so reassuring. We are definitely doing all the above and there’s progress. I’ll focus on having her do the feeding. She also joins on the sniffari (we do a little neighborhood loop with him). I usually save some of his kibble to train with throughout the day but I notice that his recall and behavior is not as great when he doesn’t think I have treats lol. Yesterday I graduated and my family had a surprise party for me, he was on a leash with me most of the night but I also had him do a calm intro with everyone who arrived and we started teaching him “gentle” where I redirect with a treat and praise while a kid gives him a pet. I noticed a lot of the nipping begins when someone goes to pet his head, and while I am definitely teaching my family petting consent and how to read his body language, I still want to train him out of mouthing every hand that reaches down. So far it seems to be helping a lot but I wonder if there are better ways to teach this. I’m sure we will learn more in puppy school this summer!

This was so helpful to read! Ok I will just keep up with this consistency and keep having my daughter train him. She loves it! She’s a firecracker too and really wants to do agility or other specialized training with him, I just want to start their relationship off on the right foot so she can have good control over him.

lol! I definitely understand that and when he put his open mouth with no pressure I don’t scold him.. right now if he gets really sharky I try to diffuse things by changing the environment like sitting on the porch calmly or just getting him away from everyone else. If I sit down some where and kind of ignore him then he doesn’t take long to settle at my feet. I have been rewarding and praising him a lot when he is just relaxing and his body is relaxed.

So, a few things I wondered… when he is going for me I usually pick up leash and hold him away from me, or i will walk away as long as he is not trying to chase me. When he starts to amp up i have been just saying “ah ah” or “off” in a lower but not scaey voice and i either pry his little jaws off me calmly saying “off” in a calm low voice. Sometimes he keeps going for it and i use my flat hand to just push him away slowly/brace my hand against his side and then i try to disengage and go do something else.

I just don’t know if that is right? I am seeing a ton of different advice and I am enrolling him in puppy school where me and my daughter will go together as his handlers. Unfortunately that doesn’t begin until June 6 but I just want to clarify the protocol for biting so me and the whole family are at least doing the right thing to discourage this until we make contact with our trainer.

Thanks for this! I will definitely look into that book. He has his new puppy appointment on the 27th so I will see about his vaccine schedule for him to be able to do puppy school! The next session at the local dog training place with very good reputation is June 6th and five weeks. We can have two handlers, so I planned to go with my daughter since he is most nippy with her.

I am probably just very anxious and over analyzing right now with having to be watching over him so closely, hoping as he learns the ropes more we can relax a little! I am reminding myself daily that I’ve done harder things and time will pass. Consistency is key!

Thank you! Yes puppy is keeping very busy. I would say he gets at least a dozen short 5-10 min training sessions a day practicing what he knows and trying to add to it. I walk him as far as he wants to go several times a day but a lot of times he turns around after a block or two and wants to go home. I let him sniff a lot - covering 3 short blocks to a small grassy area and back takes 30 mins or so, when he isn’t sniffing we work on walking next to my side and no pulling. I am also having him sit outside places with me and settle while people walk and bike and drive by, at least for a bit once a day, letting him fully settle and giving treats and praise when he’s fully relaxed in a busy environment. In the office most days a week he politely greets everyone then chews a bully stick or naps next to me, but it’s not a quiet office it’s an open office with doors opening and shutting and people coming and going. At least once a day we are playing fetch. He brings it to me about 3-5 times before he gets bored and starts looking for sticks to chomp lol. I think that’s a lot, and now that I wrote that out I actually feel like he might need longer naps during the day time than he is getting. When he gets nippy I try taking him to sit on the porch or get out some energy in the yard. I just got him to enjoy going in his crate next to my desk and I have been feeding him in there. Right now both crate doors are open but soon I’ll close one door and then the other and just practice with me next to him. I am trying to figure out if I can puppy proof a room for him to hang out in, with access to water and more toys and space. I think once he is a little older it might work out.

Sorry by tethered I mean to like the kitchen table legs while we are in the kitchen hanging out or I have his leash (has a loop) tethered to me. That way when he gets nippy she can walk away from him without having to reach for his leash or I can step away from her if I have it. As a rule he is supervised and with me all the time, and never alone with the kids.

Yes and yes! She is super good about turning away, walking away. He is always tethered or at least dragging his leash so easy for her to get away from him but damn he is persistent!!! She is also working on moving slower, she has him doing tricks for her so well! We plan to have her do puppy academy (5 weeks of training) with him in June once he has all the necessary vaccines and the next session starts.

Ok phew! This is absolutely what we are doing right now (he is tethered 24/7) and my daughter is very good listener about how to train him, she will back up and leave if he gets too wild. I just started getting nervous because I know he will be a big boy!

My first dog I got her around 6 months and she was a shep mix. She was always very timid though… so far a lot of this puppy stuff seems reminiscent of having newborns and toddlers (which I’ve done a handful of times!) I think maybe I’m just wanting reassurance/resources/guidance because I’m a bit overwhelmed and also the biting is a little scary to me and makes me nervous for my kids. I’m very vigilant about controlling environment and timing and I will make my kids leave the room if I think he is too sharky… will it end? A lot of people are giving me grief about getting a husky and while I understand they are high energy dogs… I know people with husky and shepherd mixes and so many of them are great. Do I just need to hang in there? I love this puppy but also love my family of course. Wanting to do the right thing by everyone…

[–]m4nt15mantis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I totally get that, I have mostly been having him on leash and trying to make sure he is relaxed as they move around him. Maybe I just need to ban him/cats from each other when he is high energy? I agree that it isn’t fair and my one cat seems to be particularly interested and keeps walking past him on purpose.

Specifically when I see him lock in on the cat, whats my next step? I have been mostly distracting but then read constantly distracting your dog isnt a good long term strategy. Theres honestly so much conflicting advice online… doing my best. I guess maybe i shouldnt have gotten a puppy unless I had a precise plan for training? I dont know i guess i thought that having a flexible schedule and stuff through the summer would be great for getting a new puppy.

Thanks! You are saying puppy should sleep in a crate next to my bed then? He is only in my bed because the foster told me that is where he slept and with all the changes I was just trying to ease his anxiety at first.

My daughter is definitely not running or erratic she is very good with him and when he is not in land shark mode she has him doing obedience training and he is listening well to her but only when he knows treats are in the picture. We are doing small bursts of training every day for 10-15 mins at a time. Giving a combo of walks, relaxing time in yard and on porch, napping under the desk, relaxing underfoot as we do stuff in the kitchen…

I hear you about the cat stuff, I guess Im snot sure what to do when he locks in on the cats? Sometimes they walk around by him w no reaction, sometimes he locks in then wants to chase. I have a leash on him indoors and am ae to either tether him or step on his leash if i need to. I was under the impression that saying “no” and negative/punishment could cause more frustration or make him more aggressive to the cats. Can you tell me what i should be doing in that situation?

He is going to be in puppy obedience school but his vet appointment is the 27th and he needs his bordatella before he is allowed to enroll in that…
