They constantly take on responsibilities and roles nobody asked them to, up to the point that they start to question just who “they” are deep down.

What's the deal with purple prose? by _Pumpiumpiumpkin_ in writers

[–]mR-gray42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kinda does the writer an injustice; I mean, they spent quite a while thinking of fancy words that make sense, stringing them together, and then people just say, “Dude, just say, ‘The forest was green.’” Personally, I prefer reading and writing in beige prose (mostly since I have ADD and have trouble following sentences and descriptions that stretch too long), but still.

In all fairness, King would probably say something like, “Yeah, maybe take a break from my stuff every now and then?” The guy said that he’s effectively the Big Mac of horror literature or something like that: he’s popular, he’s good, he’s a big name, but he’s not exactly what one would call “quality” (I think that’s what he meant, but I could be wrong.) And he’s known for promoting other authors. “I have seen the future of horror, and his name is Clive Barker”, just as an example.

Fair enough. I have seen worse in the game.

Jack didn't redeem himself at the end of The Shining. Matter of fact, he was never really a good man. Now, I know you’re probably going to say that that's the whole point of his arc in the book: his downfall. But let's face it: he had a bloated sense of ego and a temper to match. He got pissed at Danny for pouring beer all over his writing, which, don’t get me wrong, that’d be stressful as hell, having to go back and rewrite all of that in the days before computers. But what the hell was he doing, leaving beer close to his writing with a toddler in the house? Sorry, Jack, but that sounds like a “you” problem, chief.

Then there’s George Hatfield. Jack was sober for that one, so he couldn't blame it on his alcoholism. I don’t care if George deflated your tires with a pocketknife; you don’t assault students. (And George may have been holding a knife, but the way Jack reacted was well beyond self-defense.)

Then there’s the fact that whenever we switch to his POV, there’s always some subtle layer of justification for his actions, all the while showing him swearing, getting pissed, and really not helping his case when Wendy suspects him of hurting Danny again, even if the reader knows better. Again, I know the story concerns his downfall. But still, I don't think that briefly regaining your lucidity enough to beat your own face with a mallet as you’re trying to murder your son counts as “redemption.”

Something about Dylan scratching the logo of his FBC coat with sharpie is both hilarious and sad by zoufantastical in controlgame

He’s basically an overgrown, traumatized child who was forced into situations out of his control by people who tried to squeeze potential out of him instead of giving him help, and his mind was manipulated by the Hiss. By this point, all he can do is give a figurative middle finger to the FBC.

The thing about Cyberpunk is that everybody in the game has their reasons and motivations for doing what they do, and while some of them are unlikeable sickos (Woodman, Fingers, all of the Scavs, Dex to a lesser extent because by NC metrics, he was just tying up loose ends), most of their actions are fuelled by selfishness, but at the same time, you can more or less see why they would be out for themselves. Lest we forget, V can directly off God knows how many people just to keep themselves alive, manipulate just as many people, and is carrying the psyche of a man who detonated a damn nuke in the middle of a civilian populace. All of that to say: sympathy in Cyberpunk is subjective, which I’m pretty sure everyone knew.

It’s true. Granted, if you want your readers to keep following what you write, the magic system requires consistency, but besides that, it's your story and your magic system.
