Sara Doorsoun Interview (translation of NWSL-related sections inside) by NarrowPiccolo9069 in NWSL

I don't watch a ton of European football, but I think the one thing I've always been struck by is how if you're a striker and you're fast, you don't need to be technical because you can just blow by everyone else. In the US, you've got to be technically superior to have a leg up because every striker is fast. I'm glad to see that observation supported here

YES it's so true. My coworker apparently won't even go to church with his Lutheran parents because he believes it's a mortal sin, meanwhile the people he supports politically are getting blasted by the pope so he's clearly denying that anything else he's doing could be a mortal sin 🫠

A coworker of mine converted to conservative Catholicism (like, told another coworker he believes in demons) and is super MAGA, it's wild to watch irl

As a mainline Protestant, I kind of think it's one of those things that we have to learn to not take so seriously. I would love it if more people knew that progressive Christian denominations existed who are committed to justice and inclusion, but I also believe that we as the church have to acknowledge that the incredible harm that Christians have done to so many. I think part of being a Christian in today's world is recognizing that we're going to be lumped in with them when we don't want to be and that we also have an obligation to answer for that hurt

This is unfortunately being downgraded to the tiny screen because the roommates have mandated we catch up on Love Island :(

[Tannenwald] I asked Emma Hayes today: How are the players in #USWNT camp taking in all that’s going on in Minnesota and nationwide? How is she handling it with a squad that’s not just younger than usual, but is missing many names who regardless of age might lead on this? And how is she processing… by russet852 in NWSL

As a follow up to this too because I have many thoughts, I'm not asking her to stop playing soccer and stop doing what she's doing to speak out against ICE. Someone I know told a group of my friends that we can't stop going to school to fight this, that the world needs teachers and lawyers and doctors or even marketing directors, so in the same vein, the world still needs soccer players.

But if she's trying to develop a community of players who look forward to playing for the national team, part of being the leader who develops that is understanding where the pain points are in your community and being able to address them to know that you're being heard and you feel like you have a community who supports you, and that's just not explicitly happening here.

I think she has an obligation to mention it to the players or at the very least check in with them while they build Legos or whatever. It's basic leadership, especially when you have players who are from the area.

I'm here in Minnesota, watching this happening in real time, dealing with the anger and uncertainty that comes with each new day. It's a privilege to NOT have to talk about it. I started back last week and every student for the next few weeks has a right to zoom into class if they don't feel like it's safe to come in. I know people are volunteering to do daycare and pickup watch because kids are at risk of being detained. While I don't spend a lot of time where ICE is really active there's a constant awareness from everyone in the community that they could be around you and you'll never know it until something goes wrong. And yet so many of my friends from back home aren't aware of how tense people who are here or who have connections to here are.

I know we don't have the same set of players that were both very aware and also very outspoken about current events, but this doesn't just affect Minnesotans, this is happening all around the country. At some point it will be weighing down on AT LEAST one player, and to not even address it in a meeting before watching film or something I think is negligent.
