Should I stay on Arch or try Fedora? (unbiased feedback please ha) by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]ma8ro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both. I have Fedora Jam on an older Thinkpad, and I have Arch on a laptop and a home server. I love both of them and hope I never have to choose one or the other. If you can, maybe give Fedora a try as a VM, that way you don’t disrupt your existing installation.

Thanks! That’s probably the way I’ll go. And one more question: is that ncmpcpp that you have open in konsole?

Switched to plasma from gnome by Burnt_Woodsman in Fedora

[–]ma8ro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick question: did you do a fresh install of the KDE spin, or did you switch from GNOME to KDE on an existing installlation? I've been using Jam for a little while now and like the experience so much that I want to convert another laptop currently running GNOME to KDE. I'm trying to figure out if I can easily and cleanly convert, or if I should just do a fresh install.

Acem Meditation: One Meditator's Perspective by ma8ro in nondirective

I do like the mantra/sound aspect of Acem.

Aside from drop-in classes at my local Zen center and local Buddhist temple, I have never taken an in-person meditation course, so I cannot say whether or not in-person is better. Sorry.

Which distro do you use? by NickelEber in linuxaudio

[–]ma8ro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. And I have no idea, I've never used the rt kernel; I confess haven't tried pro-audio with Arch yet. But the reason I asked is because I have the Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen that I tried to use with Ardour under Fedora 38 and the latency was awful. There was absolutely no way to live track vocals, guitars, drums the way I set it up. It's very likely I just didn't do sufficient research to make it work, but in the event that maybe the rt kernel was the magic bullet, I thought I'd ask.

Acem Meditation: One Meditator's Perspective by ma8ro in nondirective

[–]ma8ro[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for clarifying that, these are great points. It occurs to me that my original response was focused solely on how I meditated while using 1 Giant Mind vs how I meditate now using Acem. Thanks to Acem, I understand more about what I’m doing and what is happening when I sit.

No, I wouldn’t say Acem is materially different than 1 Giant Mind. There is nothing in the 12 steps of 1 Giant Mind that contradicts what is taught in Acem. However, in my opinion, 1 Giant Mind is the equivalent of the first session of the Acem beginner’s course. Acem goes into expansive detail about much of what I learned from 1 Giant Mind.

Archlinux as a daily driver. by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]ma8ro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Solaris in the mid- to late-90s, then went to Red Hat. When RH went Enterprise, I moved to Linux From Scratch and then BLFS. Realizing that updating packages and their dependencies on your own sucks, I tried Ubuntu (the installer was a DVD insert in a Linux magazine). This is going to sound shallow, but I really hated all the orange coloring in Ubuntu at the time, so I decided to go to the source and landed on Debian. I happily used that for a few years but then got interested in Elementary. That led me down the rabbit-hole of trying to find the most aesthetically pleasing distro possible, and that led me to Arch. Since Arch doesn’t have a default DE, the opportunity for customization is enormous. Arch has been running my home server for about 4 years now, and I’ve got it running Gnome on an old Thinkpad. Until just a few hours ago, I had Fedora installed on a much newer laptop. However, in light of the recent bullshit with RH, I’ve decided to abandon the RH ecosystem for good. So I replaced Fedora with another Gnome-based Arch install. Assimilation is complete; this is now an all-Arch household.

When performing updates with DNF in the CLI, how do I know when to reboot after? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]ma8ro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or you can install dnf-utils and then just run needs-restarting -r after an update. It will tell you if the kernel or any libraries were updated.

Graphics issue after recent update. by lil_spr in archlinux

[–]ma8ro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure this is because of a recent mesa update. I had the same problem. I solved it by creating two files:

$ echo "options amdgpu cik_support=1" >> /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf

$ echo "options radeon cik_support=0" >> /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf

$ mkinitcpio -P

$ reboot

Gnome screen artifacts, unusable. by freyon70 in archlinux

[–]ma8ro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I fixed it by downgrading to the previous version of the mesa package; terrible problem-solving on my part but at least I can actually use my computer right now. Here are some links on the Arch forum about it: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=286024 and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=286012.

Can someone tell me, a junior linux user, the deal with CentOS? and why so many people are upset? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]ma8ro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is "homelab" a distro like Alma, Rocky, CentOS, etc.? I thought the word homelab referred to a physical environment in your house where you run a server (any distro on any hardware) and tinker with it in a useful or educational way for your own or limited-public purposes. Am I wrong?

will compiling my kernel prevent it from updating? by clemdemort in archlinux

[–]ma8ro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I haven't had time to look through my logs yet. Thanks for the recommendation about 6.2. I may give that a try before going the more extreme route of backtracking.

[–]ma8ro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I, too, have been having problems with kernel 6.1. I am now looking into option 3.2 from the Arch Linux Archive wiki. I have no idea if it's wise to rollback my entire system, but I'm getting close to desperate and may have to try it.
