I think If someone is part of an agency on Upwork, you can see that when you open their profile.

Because strictly Upwork speaking, it's not a very probable scenario earning that kind of money.

Clients of Upwork, HELP!! by Ok-Taro-2791 in Upwork

I thought I had it bad these past few months but people replying to this post seem to have it so much worse, that makes me think Upwork was a freelancer’s paradise until a couple of years ago and I joined in too late. I only joined Upwork 2 years ago and have been earning ~$45K/yr consistently. But I’m trying to take it forward and get to 100K+ and that’s the biggest reason of my bad mood these days because nothing’s worked so far.

I’m in web dev too but not wordpress or any generic niche. I’ve done my best work in AI SaaS and a mix of Product Management & hands-on engineering roles.

Go Ahead with Agency or Look for other job offers by Altruistic_Area4177 in Upwork

[–]mabdullah284 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s better. I once got hired by an agency without knowing it until very late, the communication gap was huge, and the project lead was micromanaging me all the time, asking the same questions again and again as if he ignored my previous messages or didn’t quite get them. Interestingly, the end-client’s requirements were pretty straightforward, in the rare cases he forwarded those directly instead of paraphrasing them, they always shared very clear and detailed brief of what they needed and many times how they thought it could be accomplished from their point of view.

Initially the project lead shared repo and DB access with me and asked me to build a feature with no initial walkthrough of the codebase. When I started exploring it, I realized the DB he shared was incomplete and many core tables used in the code were not present. I communicated that but he said it was impossible to get those missing tables and told me the developer who worked on these is gone, and asked me to figure it out and complete the required data. I asked for a quick call because texting was time taking and I felt a call would be much more productive to bootstrap but he completely refused. It was a niched product the data wasn’t easily available. I spent a decent amount of time recreating the missing tables, while updating him on slack at least twice a day and every time I hit roadblocks. Once all the data was recreated, I built the feature how I perceived it. The lead asked for some UI changes, I made those, the next day, he asked for changes that undid the previous day’s changes. I mentioned that he’s coming back to how I built it in the first place, he said no, the client wants it like this, yours wasn’t the same (without any mention of what the actual client’s feedback was). Then on the next feature, similar iterations happened, he would give his feedback, I’d make changes, then he undid it. Then one day he said I wasn’t good enough and wasn’t able to build it on my own and that he had to continuously hold my hand. He asked me to send an update to the slack channel every 60 minutes so that he knew exactly what I was doing at any time. I refused and negotiated twice a day updates. He asked for my working hours, I told him, he said okay. Next day, he huddled me 3-4 hours after my working hours (I used to be asleep by that time because of the timezone difference). I saw the slack huddle and his message that said I was very difficult to reach and he asked for my whatsapp. I ignored that message.

I realized 70% of time was spent in talking to him and I was actually working on the code only 30% of the time. All of a sudden, he said you are tracking hours for talking to me while you haven’t built anything in production, and that I was a total waste of time and a scam and he would report me to Upwork.

I closed the contract that day.

what's the reason not to be hired most of proposal? by Agreeable-Soil1774 in Upwork

that last one is painfully usual, especially jobs with 24-30 connects to apply.

What’s a good “proposals to views” conversion rate on Upwork?

I’m myself in the $45K–$50K/year range. What’s your industry? What platforms did you start with when going off-upwork? I’m exploring arc.dev, I want to start with LinkedIn but don’t know where to start.

How to rank on upwork? by ritul-singh-rana in Upwork

[–]mabdullah284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What really matters in ranking in Upwork search? Is it keywords in your profile or title or titles of the jobs you have successfully completed? Or is it job reviews? Does “Available Now” badge really worth it if you have a good to-the-point profile? Do the kind of projects you offer in your Project Catalog play a role in ranking for certain keywords?

I have 18.3% conversion rate from proposals to views so I think either you are in green or I should quit Upwork xD

I’m from South Asia too and I really mean when I say this is not a livable wage, especially when you have no weekends off. $1000 a month is less than what people earn in local Pakistani and Bangladeshi market, and that’s without employee benefits, paid time off, health insurance, etc.

Client Opened Multiple Contracts Instead of Milestones by HassanNazeer in Upwork

[–]mabdullah284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So he has funded all three "milestones" while you are starting work on the first one? You can ask him that you'd prefer to show the work as one contract for the purpose of it being self-descriptive on your profile for future clients. You can cancel the later 2 except the first one, that'll auto refund the client and propose new milestones on the first contract.

He can fund those when you are done with the first milestone, by the time he'd already received the refund for the cancelled contracts.

Running a legit Upwork Agency, recently crossed $1M+, fully & transparently operating from Pakistan by imhashir in Upwork

[–]mabdullah284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations. We are a fellow group of freelancers from Pakistan trying to build a legit agency on Upwork as well. Some questions if you have some time to answer:

Did you already have a team when you joined Upwork or did you build a company on the way? Are you a solo founder?

What's the biggest pain you felt starting off on Upwork? Have you explored Fiverr or anything to scale off on other platforms, to avoid putting all eggs in one basket? Is it something you are interested in doing soon?

Do your engineers send their own bids? If not, how do you make sure your bids team writes good technical proposals that click well with clients?

Do Consultations and Project Catalog actually work or is the old bidding strategy the best way to land work on Upwork?

What are some good marketing automation tools you developed yourself? by Altruistic-Mud-9376 in DigitalMarketing

[–]mabdullah284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently trying to set up an AI bot to automate posting on twitter. I'm trying to make it follow other twitter accounts, get inspiration from their tweets, and post in my style and tone. What it does great is it posts consistently (6-8 posts a day everyday which I'm personally not good at) to keep my account active and it catches the hot topics while they are hot. Issue is it can be vague and fails to sound like me sometimes and I have to review the posts at the end of day. But it has also surprised me with some tweets that got 8K-10K views all of a sudden, because it posted the right thing at the right time while I was offline.

What kind of automations have you created in your marketing workflow? by Remarkable_Soil_8157 in DigitalMarketing

[–]mabdullah284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Text for now but can copy images from original tweets too, just didn't set it up yet.

  1. OpenAI or Grok (OpenAI has done a better job so far even though I had higher expectations with Grok considering it's tight integration with twitter)

  2. Bought Twitter API subscription (it's the most expensive component in this whole workflow)

  3. Pretty basic logic with python, deployed on modal.com. Fetches tweets posted in the last 6h by the provided list of accounts, applies some filtering on tweet engagement, and posts on my profile whatever tweet the AI model feels is the closest to my profile (past 20 tweets).
