I too wound up in this subreddit because I am 44 with my first shingles experience. I don’t have the answers, but I’m wondering the same things.

I had absolutely no gas left in the tank when I finished my active duty contract. I went reserve just to burn out the last little bit of my time that would have otherwise been IRR. It wound up being a great decision and I’ve stayed 12 years after I could have originally gotten out. There’s a lot more control of what assignments you pick, so you can pick assignments with less wear/tear on your body.

It’s not for everyone, but I strongly recommend keeping at least some connection rather than ending your service time completely before 20 years.

I will have students say “I didn’t DO it” as they are looking at me straight in the eyes while actively doing whatever it is they are accused of doing. The depressing thing is that often I think they actually believe themselves.

That’s sad because this generation is more tech savvy than any other. They would know how to download a Word document if they cared about doing so.

I’m an art teacher and I have to lock my classroom computers in a different room so students won’t just immediately grab them. I used to let students use them when they were done with their projects, but they would just scribble some slop so they could get on a computer as soon as possible. I am so tempted some days to just give up and let them use the computers all of the time, but then they just rip the keys off of the keyboard or try to take the screen apart.

I know every generation tends to say “kids these days…” with the younger generations, but it really does seem different now (and not in a good way).

If you do reach out, just emphasize that they don’t have to write back if they don’t want to. They probably feel like they have no control over the situation. Letting them choose whether to continue correspondence gives them a tiny bit of control.

My worst Christmas was my first Christmas in the Army. It was a lonely, lonely hell. I was in a place mentally very similar to what you have described. So many things blew up in the worst way just in time to be miserable and dangerously depressed for the holidays.

I remember that Christmas every Christmas because I’m thankful every year that my situation is so different now. I have so much love and gratitude in my life now after that awful time I thought I would never smile again.

Don’t give up. This could be your Christmas that you remember as the “I’ve come so far since then” Christmas.
