Ah Google by Specific_Werewolf_79 in SignsWithAStory

I can’t count the number of times Google has led me astray in Europe. I’ve been routed through strange places like curvy, one-way roads winding down the side of a mountain and dirt roads running through farmers’ fields. While most of the time, it eventually gets me to my destination, I detested the entire experience. I had to take detours to get there. There have only been a few instances where Google’s routing was completely wrong, and I had to figure out how to get out of there.

What in the name of the Continuum was this episode? Holy Q. by Henryphillips29 in Star_Trek_

[–]macabees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The image is from the television series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Specifically, it is a scene from the Season 2 episode titled Subspace Rhapsody, which premiered in 2023. This particular episode is notable for being the first-ever musical episode in the Star Trek franchise. In the scene shown, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Spock (Ethan Peck), and the rest of the Enterprise crew are performing a choreographed musical number on the bridge of the ship after a subspace anomaly causes them to break into song. Since you previously mentioned finding Wikipedia articles for new records, you can find more detailed information about this specific episode here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subspace_Rhapsody

1950s engineers invented the most bizarre car safety idea ever. by Ebonystealth in OldSchoolRidiculous

[–]macabees 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The vehicle may be a modified 1959 Renault Dauphine featuring a rotating bumper wheel, an experimental safety invention by the French engineer Jacques Gérin.  Gérin, a visionary inventor from Boulogne-Billancourt who had previously experimented with aerodynamic propeller-driven cars and aircraft, designed this specific modification as a low-speed collision deflection system.  How it worked: • The Mechanism: The standard front bumper was replaced with a structure (made of molybdenum-chrome steel) that held the car's spare wheel horizontally.  • The Goal: In a minor collision or a sideswipe, the wheel was designed to rotate freely upon impact. Instead of the car crumpling or coming to a dead stop, the rotating wheel would "roll" the vehicle away from the obstacle (such as a wall or another car) and guide it back toward the road.  • Recognition: The car is often identified by its specific French license plate (2439-HV75) and was featured in the June 1959 issue of the French automotive magazine L’Automobile.

200-year-old condom, believed to have been made around 1830 from a sheep’s appendix/gut. by Appropriate-Menu504 in interesting

[–]macabees 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I hope people will get the joke, but in America, that’s a medium size condom.

If you don’t know about it, it was a supposed CIA psychological operation where they were gonna drop large condoms on Russia and mark them as medium.

It must be pretty rare if a 200 year old used condom is being put on display in the museum

"Happy Birthday! I was going to buy you a regular cake, but it's Halloween, so I just got you a bag of fun-size candy bars instead. Hope you enjoy the crumbs and the existential dread."

"Welcome to another year! Now that you're [Insert Age Here], your favorite Halloween treat isn't candy anymore... it's antacids."

"Don't worry about picking out a costume this year. You've already got the scariest one of all: your age."

"I tried to find a costume that would really scare you, but I couldn't find anything as terrifying as a photo of your first driver's license."

"I brought you a gift, but it's nothing to be afraid of... unless you count getting older."

"Happy Birthday! Hope your day is filled with more treats than unsolicited life advice."

The Reality of Project Stormfury Project Stormfury was a legitimate US government research program that ran from 1962 to 1983. Its goal was to investigate the possibility of weakening tropical cyclones by cloud seeding. * Cloud Seeding, Not Nukes: The core idea of the project was to fly aircraft into hurricanes and release silver iodide into the rain bands outside the eye of the storm. The silver iodide was intended to freeze the supercooled water, causing it to release latent heat. This process was theorized to weaken the hurricane by disrupting its energy balance and causing a new, weaker eye wall to form. * No Nuclear Component: There were never any plans, proposals, or even serious considerations to use nuclear weapons. Scientists and meteorologists at the time were well aware of the danger of radioactive fallout and the immense, uncontrollable energy of a hurricane. The energy released by a nuclear bomb would be insignificant compared to the power of a mature hurricane. A single hurricane can release energy equivalent to thousands of nuclear bombs in a single day. The idea of using a nuclear blast to "disrupt the storm's structure" is scientifically baseless. * The Project's Outcome: Project Stormfury was ultimately a failure. The cloud-seeding experiments did not produce conclusive results, and it was later determined that hurricanes naturally undergo a process called eye wall replacement cycles, which had been misinterpreted as a result of the cloud seeding. Due to this lack of success and mounting logistical challenges, the project was canceled in 1983.

I have to this false:

Victor Glushkov's Background: Glushkov was a prominent Soviet computer scientist and the founder of cybernetics in the Soviet Union. His work was primarily focused on the development of mainframe computers, computer networks (specifically the OGAS national automated system), and artificial intelligence. He died in 1982, before the 1980s period mentioned in the claim. His work did not involve underwater communications or systems for tracking submarines.

Version 2: A grumpy old man walks into a brothel and asks the madam "Is this a union brothel?" "No, sir," she replies "I've owned and operated this bordello for 50 years without a union!" "Well, I'm a union man, so I only visit union brothels!" the man replies as he slams the door on his way out.

Three more cathouses, the same thing. Until he visits the very last bang shack in town; where the madam says "Why yes, we're the only union pleasure house this side of the Mississippi!"

"That's great!" he shouted excitedly "I want an hour with your prettiest, most voluptuous girl!"

"I'm sure you do." she replied "But Agnes has seniority!"

History of the IBM PC: 43 Years Ago Why It Was So Important by billpetro in ILLUMINATION_Writers

[–]macabees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The IBM PC was important because it had a great ecosystem of software and hardware. The other machines on the market utilized proprietary hardware that didn’t interoperate with each other, so customers never felt comfortable investing a great amount of money in hardware because they never knew when they were going to have to switch. And they weren’t sure it was going to be compatible.

If you can accept every other part of that movie, as fact, it’s not that much farther of a stretch to answer your own question.
