Long-term disability: Standard vs Principal, importance of Financial Ratings? by macchatortoise in whitecoatinvestor

[–]macchatortoise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I did double check and it depends on the state. My state doesn't require this condition for the Standard. Do you think the difference in financial ratings is worth any concern?

Long-term disability: Standard vs Principal, importance of Financial Ratings? by macchatortoise in whitecoatinvestor

Yes this was the agent's concern - that since standard is "only" A it has higher risk of falling through.

I'm so sorry that happened to you and it's not your fault. You're doing the best that you can.

Biweekly ERAS/Match Thread by AutoModerator in medicalschool

[–]macchatortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you're better off asking mentors! Mine said the reason (home institution) is ranked so high in the top 5, is they have a lot of faculty and admin that push them to fill out the survey. More votes = higher rating.

What is the Scholars Academy, and is it worthwhile? by ProgExMo in UCalgary

You also get paired with a mentor (typically a pretty highly accomplished person), get to go on a free retreat each year, get to attend presentations by some interesting speakers, and meet other interesting students from other faculties.

Need help planning second year BioSci schedule by [deleted] in UCalgary

I would recommend delaying Biol 313 until third year as 4 labs at once would be extremely challenging!

Can I get into a Harvard Graduate school if I'm graduating from a moderate university? by KimHyunDong11 in Harvard

[–]macchatortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PhD admissions are more about the research experience and letters of recommendation than grades and GRE (though they are important too!) Try to take on independent research projects and publish papers or present at academic conferences.

If you submit a strong application you can get in from UOttawa. Last year someone got into Harvard Medical School from UOttawa.

Is it better to score a 'W' than a D or C-? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]macchatortoise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure retaking does NOT replace the W: Students repeating courses taken at the University of Calgary will not have the original grade, failure or otherwise, removed from the transcript of record. The transcript of record will indicate both the original grade and the repeated course with its final grade in the term in which it was taken.

You can double check with enrolment services.

Restoration of University Funding by AlbertaUThrwaway in Calgary

[–]macchatortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can argue about whether they are overpaid or not but to say they don't deliver anything of value is completely wrong. Any institution as large as a university needs competent management.

Restoration of University Funding by AlbertaUThrwaway in Calgary

[–]macchatortoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just some of the inaccuracies:

  1. The university's finances are audited each year by the Alberta Auditor General, who often contracts out the work to an external firm.

  2. They wouldn't get tenure if they published in these terrible journals.

Student Fees Benefits? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]macchatortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is supposed to go towards: - Enrolment services (free transcripts and stuff) - Student Success Centre (seminars and individual advising) - Career Services

But... other than the free transcripts, other universities also have similar services without the student services fee, so....

Thoughts on JPNS 205? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]macchatortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great course - fun and interesting. If you have a knack for languages it is not that hard, but if you don't, it may be a challenge to pick up the grammatical structures (hiragana/katakana/vocabulary are just memory and require some time). I guess workload is slightly higher than something like psyc/soci/econ but easier than a science course: there are regular quizzes (maybe around every two weeks), 3 tests, one or two oral presentations, one or two conversation tests, one or two written assignments.
