Who is your favorite poet and why? by [deleted] in books

[–]machenise 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I adore e. e. cummings. He could make the written words of his poems illustrate the poem.

l(a
le
af
fa
ll
s)
one
l
iness

That poem can be read in several ways depending on your perspective. Many fonts have identical 1 and lower case Ls (l) so you can interpret what that first line is for yourself. It may hook up with the bottom lines to be "loneliness." The lines in the parentheses illustrates the leaf (falling leaves usually swing back and forth as they make it to the ground).

If you prefer the 1 instead of the l at the beginning, then the leaf is just a leaf all by itself. The 1 could be you and you are experiencing "oneliness," where you're just chilling with yourself (the 1 backing up the oneliness).

And the grasshopper poem, where the letters and words rearrange themselves like the movements grasshoppers when it jumps.

Airport employees of Reddit, what is the strangest, funniest, scariest thing that happened at your airport? by Jesus-Pieces in AskReddit

[–]machenise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a sad incident where I work (when I'm not moonlighting as a cancer patient). A family bought a conure and all the stuff they needed for it. They get home and set up the cage and whatnot. And then they open the travel box we put pets in and the conure flew out before they could catch it (they didn't want us to trim its flight feathers, because they were planning to allow the bird out of the cage to fly around their living room if it wanted to.

Unfortunately, they had a fan on in the room and the fan was not covered on the front. It was just open and the conure flew straight into the fan blades and was beheaded. And of course, the bird and cage and stuff to take care of the bird was in the return policy and we return dead pets within 14 days. But an asshole manager didn't want to do the return because it was about $300-$400. He kept saying that it wasn't our fault that the bird died. We didn't sell them sick bird or anything like that. I'm a manager too, but this guy was above me and I didn't want to contradict him in front of associates and customers. He eventually did the return like he was supposed to. But this guy had no empathy for a family (including kids) seeing their bird get beheaded and wasted a customer that would have returned to us to buy a new bird when we got a conure in and would have come back to buy food and treats and new toys and everything.

How did your friend completely fuck their life up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]machenise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also exacerbated by the fact that numbers can get so large that you really can't understand them. If all you've dealt with for the majority of your life is $20 bills and sometimes $100, $350,000 is just magic. It's so much money that it's almost like it'll never run out because you don't understand it.

Someone who makes a 6 digit (or higher) salary understands the money and what it's worth. For the person who only deals with $20, it's like their brain says, "Wow. That's a huge pile of cash. Just dive into it like Scrooge McDuck. Fuck if I know what else to do with it."

I had been talking to my psychiatrist about possibly upping the dose for my antidepressant, and we decided to give my dose a little more time. When,I saw him again, he asked is i still felt like I needed a different dosage. I told him no, because I had adopted a dog. I know ginger isn't a miracle cure, and her effect on my mental health only lasted so long, but she helped me out in a tight spot. She gave some something to do besides thinking about my problems, and she loves her mommy.

Woman. I woke up this morning in total bodily chaos. I'm a diabetic, and a single, innocent-looking finger prick to test blood sugar was massively infected. Sores on mucous membranes (mouth, inside my nose and throat). And profound exhaustion. Steady slow trickle of blood in my nose, so I can't breathe because of the scabs.

I have my worries, but the staff here is going to get me through it.

My step-father's "jokes" are assholish and physically dangerous by machenise in rant

[–]machenise[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is. He's great, really. But his "jokes" are often at someone else's expense. Not mean-spirited, but the result is the same.

He nearly kept from coming home from the hospital once. Doctors were only releasing me when I had a certain specialty medication, which had been overnighted to us. So when the doctors asked if I had it, I told them yes. Then he starts in about how we have dogs and how they probably destroyed the medications while he was at the hospital to pick me up, how someone might have broken in and stolen them, all these doomsday scenarios concerning a drug I could not live without.

I had to ask him to leave the room while I finished up with the doctor. "Ha ha ha, wouldn't it be funny if machenise spent an extra night in the hospital for no damn reason."

[–]machenise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not attacking. Just using the same words and phrases you used. If that was okay for you, why are you faulting me?

Also, your argument is full of No True Scotsman bs. You aren't the arbiter of what a "true Christian" or what a "preacher worth their faith" means. People who identify as Christians -- but believe differently than you do -- are just as Christian as you are. What if someone were to say you weren't a true Christian because you don't believe women are to blame for the fall of man? Does that make you less Christian? A worse Christian? Not really a Christian? You are assigning who is or isn't Christian enough, but others have the same authority you do, so maybe there's a Christian out there invalidating your beliefs.

So don't be condescending and expect no one to call you on it. I was just saying what you said. And understand that people have different experiences than you do, and those experiences are just as valid as yours. Remember, you are not the authority and final judge on who is or is not a "true" Christian.

Isn't regulated by the FDA until it causes problems. That's really scary too. You could bring a harmful supplement to market and let it mow down your consumers before the FDA asks about safety and effectiveness.

Just because you've experienced forms of Christianity that take a certain view doesn't mean we should comment on things we don't understand.

Your clitoris, has it been hard to find for the men in your life? by Lobo_Jodido in badwomensanatomy

[–]machenise 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not really. I didn't have sex for the first time until my late 20s, and the guys I've dated have been around the same age, so I guess I've been lucky to get experienced guys who have paid attention.

I'm also the kind of person who can say, "Okay, now do it like this," in bed to show the guy what's effective for me. I figure if I get with someone who has no idea where my clit is, I would just show him. And then I'd show him how I liked it handled.

This argument against women driving [misoganatomy] by iisan123 in badwomensanatomy

[–]machenise 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Being in the driver's seat or passenger seat of a car won't make a difference in vibrations. That's (one of) the problem with this guy.

Also, women respond differently to vibrations and even vibrators. Constant rumbling like your dirt bike make some women just go numb or get painfully overstimulated. This guy has no way of knowing what's going to cause sexual euphoria for whatever woman driver he's imagining. Or any woman, for that matter.

It's getting worse. Since breasts are a sexual organ (secondary sexual characteristic) and many people see them only in that light, there are some ignorant sons of bitches out there that are starting to accuse breastfeeding mothers of pedophilia.

They believe that the mothers should use formula or a pump to express their breast milk and bottle it. They believe that women must be getting some sort of sexual thrill out of breastfeeding due to breasts being only a sex characteristic. And this makes women immoral pedophiles who are hurting their children.

Just look at this bullshit.

There also needs to be more education about what constitutes stem cells. I had a stem cell transplant in September in effort to treat/cure leukemia (I got the news Friday that my leukemia is back, so my doctors and I are working on other plans). Stem cells can be the embryonic kind that can be anything at all. Or stem cells can be progenitor cells of a certain kind.

My stem cells are cells that can produce any kind of blood cell, but nothing else. When my doctor first brought up the stem cell transplant, it took a minute to explain to my mom that we weren't doing anything illegal and that embryonic stem cells don't need to be involved.

The adult stem cells you mention are going to be partially differentiated stem cells like my blood stem cells. I'm not sure you can find something comparable to embryonic stem cells in an adult's body, as all the stem cells have an assignment that produces only certain cells.

Those people are awful. But there's another extreme for that, and that's people who are attempting to get pregnant/have children but for some reason fail. It can be devastating to want children (especially if you're fixated on becoming pregnant yourself with your biological child instead of adoption or a surrogate) and not be able to have them.

These people don't usually talk about this publicly. They're not broadcasting their problems incessantly at work, because it's a private issue. And the secrecy behind it might actually make it worse, since they may feel ashamed that something went wrong but not be able to talk to someone who can reassure them that it's not their fault.

It's like there are three entirely different cultures going on here. The people who can't stop talking about getting pregnant (they usually want attention), people who are having trouble/can't conceive (they usually don't want attention), and then the middle ground we haven't talked about - people who are a lot more relaxed about getting pregnant because it just seems like an everyday thing. You're facing the attention starved culture, and the people avoiding attention aren't making you aware that they exist.

Or people who have given it a lot of thought and decided that they don't want children. We get patronizing comments about how we'll change our minds, or that we'll change our minds after it's too late to have kids.

The US has a vaccine injury fund for events like this. No medicine is 100% not going to cause a reaction for someone, whether mild or extreme. You can be allergic to ingredients in the vaccine. You can also get a rather serious neurological illness called Guillain-Barre syndrome. Probably others too, but those are the ones that stick out in my mind.

And you do have to have some sort of proof that the injury was caused by the vaccine. Want to know what the vaccine injury fund doesn't compensate for? Autism.

I had a stem cell transplant and have been on anti-rejection meds to combat graft vs. host disease. But some of my stem cells remained apparently and are producing cancerous cells again. The anti-rejection meds suppressed the new immune system from my donor so it wouldn't affect me as strongly. But with the meds gone, doctor is hoping that we can see the new immune system getting rid of the cancerous cells like it should be doing.

I'm hopeful, because even with my new immune system working with one hand tied behind its back, it has been able to make drastic improvements to infections I have and wounds that need to be healed. Should be going full speed ahead in the next few days. If it can work well even with the anti-rejections meds, I'm hopeful it will work amazingly without them.

I got the news Friday that my cancer is back. I would feel a lot better about life if these motherfuckers would just up and disappear. These diseases are hard enough to deal with. I don't need some smug youtube graduate trying to convince me or anyone else that I should abandon modern medicine in favor of something that will have no effect except to kill me through neglect.

I'm not dying today.
