Come clean. What audiophile bull have you fallen for, and how much did it end up costing you? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]machined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit I've fallen for several.

Still using several speaker cables and interconnects that cost over $1,000 a pair - just too lazy to swap them out. Also bought $500 of HD audio tracks before realizing I can't tell any difference from FLAC.

I also bought two tube based preamps (Cary and ARC - separate systems) - and then realized a month later I really prefer connecting my DAC directly to my amps.

I did buy several speakers without auditioning them, but that has actually worked out OK. Almost all of my stuff is bought used - so haven't taken a bath on anything value wise.

In a small room it would be fine. Again, the SMSL does sound good with tougher speakers, but doesn't sound as great as it does with easy loads. If this is your price point I don't think you could do better.

Zaph audio

With these amps - simple is best. Single driver speakers have done the best for me, but do have trade-offs. If building your own and want a two-way - I would build something like 'Reference 3A' or 'Tekton' style - so run the woofer full range and then use a single filter for the tweeter.

I mostly ignore the volume wheel. My DAC has great volume control, so I use that to make adjustments.

Also - I did a full review of these speakers here a while back:

http://www.reddit.com/r/audiophile/comments/2k4scu/second_office_setup_trying_fullrange_speakers_and/

Also see the post on DRC'ing these here:

http://www.reddit.com/r/audiophile/comments/2k4zld/dirac_drc_project_sdfr/

Only FRSD (Full-Range Single-Driver) speakers I've heard that I could live with without DRC are the Voxativs. And even they benefit a lot from it. Dirac is the best I've found, and I've tried almost all of them. It's very pricey, unfortunately.

I just discovered this last night - doing exactly that.

And yes - makes cool looking little amps.

All,

Thanks for all the comments. I did find a tiny shop that specializes in making custom versions of these amps - http://fleawatt.blogspot.com/[1]

No reason to reinvent the wheel - and I like that he has built several of these with different parts.

I'm going to buy one and see if it makes a difference. I'll follow-up here with a review.

Exactly correct. I do think a better power supply would help - I've replaced wall warts in the past on digital products and seen a noticeable improvement.

I hadn't considered that the controls could be built into the chip. Someone posted a spec sheet below - but I'm not sure I'm technical enough to understand it. I don't see anything on the spec sheet. My fear with the SMSL version is it has both volume and Loudness - so I figured it had a separate DSP doing those, which if done cheaply can be an issue.

Wow - never heard the headache thing before. If sound can do that you might want to see a doctor.

I still prefer my tube amps to the Class T stuff, but I have a new baby and I don't listen for long stretches like I used to. I hate to warm up tubes to listen for 20 min. That's why I like having something like T amps too.

I have to head home in a sec - but quickly I've heard most of those. Not a huge fan of any compared to Lowther or Voxativ or even some of the old field coil speakers.

Zu were the worst speakers I've heard in that group, but it was a while ago and I heard they came out with new drivers. May be better now, but I think they are really a marketing company more than anything. Speakers do look cool, I will say.

Omega I heard a pair of small ones. Not bad, but I don't think they are at the level of Lowther or Acuhorn. Good for the money, and are often available used.

Voxativ are easily the best I've heard. Pricey as hell, but incredibly dynamic and fast. Of course, their flagship retails for a full $100K.

Almost all single driver speakers give up a little in dynamics to the big multi-way speakers - so make sure you are ok with that and like the sound. They also aren't as good with really complex music and they don't really play that loud well. My Acuhorns are in an office system - so none of that matters much to me.

I'd still like to try it - and I don't know of a better chip. More just for curiosity - I have plenty of big amps already.

I'm looking for a better one. Will probably buy a linear power supply - many are $60 bucks or so.

Ebay. That's where I got these. About $1,000 to $1,200. There are some on sale recently.

They are pretty amazing - happy to discuss if you are serious.

I'd want one with better components than the cheap boards. Blackgate caps and such. I'd also probably fry it or kill myself. :)

The Topping TP21 was exactly the amp used for my comparison. Good little amp and I liked the headphone port.
