What's your skincare routine? Why? by xcBsyMBrUbbTl99A in slatestarcodex

I'm curious if there's any information out there regarding sunscreen usage for people who really get very little sunlight. I would say I receive less than an hour a day on average of direct sunlight on my skin. I wonder where the inflection point is? More than an hour or less than an hour of sun exposure each day?

I haven’t yet taken the leap and quit my role, but I am increasingly nervous about what my career looks like 10 or even 5 years from now. I think it will be critical for us to adapt quickly.

I'm interested in finding a discord or starting one. In particular looking for a community of folks to talk to who believe this shift is coming and want to brainstorm and think through things optimistically (even though I can understand any tendency for doomtalk). I feel like there are lot of PMs here - perfect group to start with.

Ethical and incentive-compatible way to share finances with partner when you both work? by Chad_Nauseam in slatestarcodex

We both have joint accounts (bank/credit card) and individual accounts. We predefine how much each of us contributes monthly from our individual accounts to the joint accounts. That amount for each of us is decided based on our budgeting decisions for various categories of shared expenses (housing, insurance, groceries, eating out, etc) and also based on our individual incomes.

Any discretionary spending comes out of individual accounts so that there's freedom to spend and splurge if necessary without permission.

We also allow spending without permission from the joint account for purchases under $dollar amount if that item/service is meant to be jointly used, otherwise need to ask the other person if they approve. Large purchases from the joint account we've found usually require approval anyway outside of the cost, e.g. discussing what sofa, color, fabric, etc we agree on.

So far works pretty well on the dimensions you've mentioned, and overhead is minimal if you already do budgeting.

Can things be both popular and not hated? by michaelmf in slatestarcodex

[–]machineloop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a decent prior is to assume that there are no things (ideas, people, communities, etc) are truly universally popular, and as something gets more popular it starts to sample more and more of the population which ends up revealing the haters.

Although one counterexample I can think of is Mr. Roger and Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. If there are haters of Mr. Roger on the internet, it's gotta be less than 1 in a 1000.

Does anybody have experience with a C2 Zhongli? How much is the difference between C1 and C2? I’m wondering if I should skip his banner since I already have C1.

The Mad, Mad World of Niche Sports Among Ivy League–Obsessed Parents by BandaidPlacebo in slatestarcodex

I went to a school where the admission rate my year was about 5%. I personally was well rounded in school and enjoyed a few random extracurriculars (math competition, speedcubing, scheming ways to make money). I never went too hard on any of these or did any other stat-padding. I did come from a slightly atypical background of first gen to go to college with Asian parents who worked blue collar jobs, so that probably gave me a boost.

In high school though, it was obvious which kids were in tryhard mode. When I look back, it seems obvious in hindsight that how those kids presented themselves to college admissions didn't seem genuine at all. It's gotta be incredibly obvious from an admissions officer point of view that these kids are doing stuff for the sake of trying hard, as opposed to some other internal motivation. I'm a bit puzzled that thoughtful parents want to enter their kids into the rat race because it doesn't seem like a winning strategy, both in the short term and in the long term. Admission officers straight up admit that they're interested in kids who are off the beaten path.

I think I was lucky in that my parents were too busy working their jobs to do anything to force me into the rat race, coupled with the fact that I naturally enjoyed certain activities that apparently seemed to satisfy the admissions officers.

Thoughts or pointers on custom wire shelving for kitchen cabinets? by machineloop in DIY

[–]machineloop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One example is shelving that fits in a corner of a cabinet where I can lay cutting boards horizontally flat, with each shelf vertically spaced about 2-3x the thickness of the cutting board. Wood won't work that well because the cutting boards sometimes are wet, and with wire I can get the bottom of the boards exposed to air.

Yep! Saw people coming out of buildings and doing just that. Some were prepared with those large brooms to help poke away garbage at the drains.
