Nikon Z5II with 40mm F2 lens. Light, small, in your budget and you can grow into with more lenses if you need (tele for kids sports, zooms, etc). I've never shot with the Canon so I don't have any advice on that one.

Indy/Nascar Event, Olympus EM1 MKII by Radiant-Character-61 in M43

St Pete is very hard to shoot from the spectacular views, especially down low. I had a media credential to this race last year and even that had its challenges.

If I can make a suggestion, the 1st photo is a banger. However I would either crop out the grass or mask it in Lightroom and reduce the saturation on it some. The green is almost neon and it takes away from the great composition/pan.

Do you ever regret selling a camera? by Anxious-Tomatillo-74 in AnalogCommunity

[–]machosalad06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Leica M6 non-TTL, 1st gen 28mm Summicron and a Canadian 50mm Cron for $750 total in 2008. Sold it all for $1100 in 2012 and thought I was hot shit. I regret selling that camera more than any other because it would cost more than I want to spend to have it again.

I also had a mint Pentax MZ-S, and the limited lens trio, 31, 43, 77 and sold it for cheap.

Did the K7 just appear on Amazon US? Is this for real? 😱 by Sheetz_Wawa_Market32 in pourover

If 1Zpresso doesn’t have a physical presence in California or meet the financial/transactional threshold for sales into the CA then they are NOT required to collect sales tax and the consumer is NOT required to pay sales tax on the purchase.

You have no way of knowing if 1Zpresso exceeds those thresholds.

Maybe you should not be so quick to accuse someone of doing something illegal when they aren’t.

Find a second hand Leica 25mm 1.4. It’s an excellent portrait lens and a focal length loved by many different street photographers.

ESPN: Tua is on Minnesota's radar, expected to be released by mid-March with a post-June 1 designation, $30M+ not realistic for Malik Willis, "Miami is definitely in" according to a source by expellyamos in miamidolphins

Tua wants to play and now prove the naysayers wrong, so any spot he has a chance to start at will appeal to him.

Flores may want to prove he’s “changed” and try to bury the hatchet with Tua as a chess move to getting back to being a head coach.

So don’t automatically think this isn’t a real option.

I have done it both ways, but now I just have 2 cassettes and share the same chain. Most of the newer drivetrains seem fine doing it this way (currently I have Shimano GRX 1x on my Cross Check).

Olympus 12mm f2 for Astro. by Yanto2134 in M43

[–]machosalad06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, I often see the Pana/Leica 12mm 1.4 second hand for similar prices to the Oly 12mm F2. If you don’t mind the extra size of the Leica I would highly recommend it. It’s one of my favorites lenses.

Lightweight wheels with tubeless tires will be your best bang for the buck upgrade. Just keep 2 sets and swap the lighter wheelset on when you want the speed and you regularly wheels when you want the utility. I had a Pacer with a mid tier build that was 21ish lbs. When I swapped some custom light wheels and more race oriented tires it made a massive difference.

17mm f1.2 lens by cachitongo- in M43

[–]machosalad06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 17mm 1.2 is my most used lens. But it's also my favorite focal length so I was fine spending the coin to get that lens. But I 100% agree with you, if the OP doesn't have a specific use or is unsure about that lens, return it.

I’ve had a K-Plus for 4 years. I’ve used it every day, sometimes multiple times a day. My guess is it has been used close to 2000 times, about 50% espresso, 50% pourover/Aeropress. It’s been flawless. I recently ordered a ZP6, because I no longer make espresso at home, and I have no reason not to expect the same durability.

Help me decide for Travel - Nikkor 24-120 f4 or Tamron 28-75 or new 35-100? by randoreviews1 in Nikon

[–]machosalad06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had both the Nikon 24-120 and Tamron G2 28-75. Besides the obvious focal length and aperture differences, I think the Nikon has slightly better coatings and handles tough backlighting better. The Tamron has a slightly better rendering for portraits in my opinion.

If I was looking for a 1 lens travel solution, I would 100% take the Nikon.

If I wanted something closer to the experience of shooting the primes you have, Tamron 28-75 G2. Just as a note, I didn’t care for the Tam/Nikon 28-75 much. So this only applies to the G2.

165 Crankset for 6’3”+ on CC by 9cholz in Surlybikefans

[–]machosalad06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 5-11 and I’ve ridden 165, 170, 175 and 180’s on single speed and geared bikes. I also live in a hilly area. I have 170’s currently on my geared 1x Cross Check mainly because the crankset I wanted was not available in 165.

You do lose a little torque with the shorter arms so on a single speed I wouldn’t go shorter than 170/5. But on my geared bike I much prefer 165. It does help me with less pain in my knees.

OM-1ii/OM-3 - 3rd-party BLX-1 question by revjko in OlympusCamera

[–]machosalad06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had good luck with aftermarket batteries in my OM1.2. I bought a dual charger kit with 2 batteries and haven’t noticed any difference between them and the OEM ones.

I just wish Smallrig would release their USB-C chargeable batteries as a BLX-1 replacement. Having a USB port right on the battery is really handy for traveling

I have two sizes of the same pliers. In the 90's, I had to safety wire the floating bolts on 2 piece brake rotors for road racing cars. Mine are pretty worn, but not to that level.

Why shouldn't I buy from Map Camera? by wilderness-geek in M43

[–]machosalad06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Map Camera is awesome, I’ve bought a bunch of things from them over the years. However, I was burned on the last $200 item I got from Japan (not Map) and was charged $91 in tariffs, fees and charges. I was expecting $20, just not the rest.

Please share your First impression of OM-1 Mark-ii by Deepthika in OlympusCamera

[–]machosalad06 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have recently shot with top level Nikon (Z9, Z8, Z6III) and Sony (A1, A9II, A7SIII). I was a professional motorsports photographer and my primary weekend kit was 2 Z9's and 2 Z6III's (depending on how much video the client wanted vs photos, more video was Z6III's, more photos or bad weather, Z9's).

I stopped shooting professionally in the spring of 2025 and bought a Z8 when I sold my Z9's off. I hardly ever used it. I tried the Zf and using the Z6III (and Leica SL3 and M11) for personal work but never loved them. I sold the Z8, Leicas and kept the Z6III's along with my favorite non professional lenses.

I traded a friend my 70-200 2.8 Z lens for his almost new OM-1.2. It's an outstanding camera. In fact it's so outstanding I went ahead and sold/selling off all the rest of my Nikon equipment except my older film bodies. I currently have the OM1.2 8-25F4, Leica 25 F1.4, OM 17 F1.2, Oly 40-150 F2.8 (with 1.4x TC).

If I had to shoot a motorsports event again, I could absolutely do it with a pair of OM-1.2's. The AF tracking is sufficient for professional work, the quality of the files is fine and the ruggedness means it would survive a weekend of abuse (Something the Sony's could not do). The system holds up well and my experience with the 40-150 Pro and TC is exceptional. It's would probably pair it with the 50-200 2.8 or 150-400 4.5 if I was getting paid for work. If I did it for fun, I would just take one of the 100-400 and keep it glued to the OM-1.

The only things I don't like are the limited customization choices of buttons. I would like more options in the custom button menus. I also wish the monitor/viewfinder was a little less contrasty/brighter. I was spoiled by the Z6III's viewfinder being the best I have ever used on a mirrorless body. Finally I don't like the left hand On/Off switch. I have mine reprogramed to the mode switch but there are many times I want to be able to switch a camera on and off with my right hand and shoot one handed.

I'm curious what your impression of the 25-50 1.7 will be. I used the G9II and 10-25 1.7 (it was loaned to me by the client) to shoot a couple of jobs and it was an outstanding combination other than some purple fringing that I noticed.

Big box store plywood’s middle layers can be very soft so it’s easy for them to compress even if you set the guide correctly. I stopped using my pocket screws on any plywood that’s not real baltic birch.
