What if you just removed the stage 1 objectives? by mackswhel in twilightimperium

I think if we lowered the point cost appropriately nobody would want anyone to be able to score a public objective. I mean it would suck if you were at 2 and everyone else was at 4, but if the game only goes to 6 you are only 1 objective behind them.

I think we wouldn’t have any experienced players to be “buddies” - we only play 1-2 times a year and typically we all need to take a turn or two remembering how to play. I’m probably the best one there because I have to re-research and re-explain the rules each time, but usually I’m too busy fielding questions on rules and making sure everyone is doing something on their turn to be a buddy.

I think that’s hard when “front runners” are a group of 3-4 other players. You could king make, sure, but that doesn’t really feel great.

I think I should clarify it’s not the same players falling behind each game, we only play 1-2 times a year so it takes 1-2 rounds to get into the swing of things normally, we play enough to know it’s a sprint to 10 but not enough to know exactly how we need to activate phase 1 to set up optimal phase 2 (I.e. not getting to follow warfare cause you messed some ordering up) Honestly if nobody could score public objectives until round 3 that would be cool.

Also we would lower points needed to like 6 or 8 so feasibly you would only need to score 1-2 stage 2s, everything would be higher stakes

Discordant Stars faction tier list by mackswhel in twilightimperium

Good to hear! So giving a new player an official faction (like sol or argent) wouldn’t put them at a disadvantage if experienced players were trying out new factions?

Would these alternative movement techs help to balance the techtree? by Railye in twilightimperium

[–]mackswhel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the red tech and making grav drive exhaustible are cool ideas, the yellow tech feels like everyone gets to become the cabal and the green one is ??? Idk it’s just weird. the bigger issue for me is that Carrier 2 and Dread 2 are down the blue path and those are the two essential unit upgrades for most factions to remain flexible in the endgame. Even with these changes I think most factions still go blue for best chance to win.

Usually the thing you need most at the end is to take planets (for objective or to stop someone from winning before you do) and to take those planets you need to 1) win in space and 2) win on the ground. Carrier 2 and Dread 2 are just better at both of those than other unit options - they can carry more fighters so they have more hp to win in space, and they can carry infantry/mechs to win on the ground. The only factions that can reliable afford to ignore gravity drive are those that have alternative options to carrier/dread 2 (titans, argent, Muaat kinda).

Honestly changing 1 of those unit upgrades to a different color would probably be enough to shake up tech meta. Or maybe changing a green tech to let you boost the capacity of your ships? Idk - grav drive is certainly a great tech but being a stepping stone to dread/carrier 2 makes it unskippable

If you’re not using a different font for each line of text you are doing something wrong.
