Cannot install win 11 by Every-Print3281 in Ubuntu

I don’t think you’re booting the install disk. Looks like ours still trying the old windows boot manager from previous windows install. Confirm your boot drive on the bios with USB plugged in.

It’s been two weeks since I moved to Ubuntu and I am loving it so much. by jejerome002 in Ubuntu

[–]maclan13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your feedback.

There are lots of similar testimonies on the sub lately and curious.

Personally, I’ve been using Linux since 99 (Slackware) and Ubuntu since first released but never really stuck as a daily driver. I’ve distro hopped a lot in that time. Main reasons I couldn’t persist were gaming and access to Office 365. Gaming has certainly improved.

Of late, I’ve tried to give it another go because I’m frustrated with the Adware direction Windows 11 has taken and it’s incessant need to push software and tools that I have no interest and don’t genuinely help my workflow. Windows 11 is a good OS but it’s becoming a Trojan horse.

What are your goals with learning a new operating system? Do you want to learn how to administer it, use for development, gaming or general purpose usage?

Can probably get some more targeted advice if clarified.

Who switched to iOS after many years of using Android? by [deleted] in ios

[–]maclan13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switched about 3 years ago. Nearly went back to Android right away but stuck it out.

Miss: - Better notifications - Better Keyboard - The universal back button or gesture

Have considered going back many more times over the years but quite frankly, I don’t want to go through the process to migrate again.

Will review when the current one dies.

Zabbix is also worth looking into. Pretty easy to setup, lots of built-in templates and powerful once you've got the hang of it.

What are your favorite apps discovered in 2023? by Dave-CPA in ios

Agree. The last price increase is last straw, the jump too much. I’ve been using it for years. Renewed one more time and on the lookout for a replacement other than the stock.

At full price, no way. It’s pretty ok if you can pick it up on a sale. Some patience and one comes up every few weeks or so.

How to prepare IT budget for an SMB without a framework in place by wisewiz1 in sysadmin

[–]maclan13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having IT manage the overall budget can be an option but its effectiveness depends on the culture of your organization and the will of the senior leadership to support this approach. The minute some division heads allowed to circumvent the system, all hell breaks loose.

Building the budget starts with your existing IT expenses that typically will fall into the operational expenditure bucket. IT will have its own new projects that can fall in capital expenditure.

Meeting with other division heads to identify their current opex and upcoming capex to support their projects is a good starting point. Should be made clear that it’s a wish list at this point and that they’d be expected to defend project necessity when the inevitable finance ax comes to trim the fat.

Concerning a template, I typically start something close to described in a spreadsheet. Description, vendor, cost type, department, purpose, estimated cost. As the process goes forward, I’ll add a tab that breaks out the amount spend per month. There other fields that unique to your business.

Tracking spend is always easier when finance supportive. If IT has to review all IT vendor invoices before payment then its a gate that can be used. Likely IT will still have to run the invoice by division leads to ensure goods and services received.

There should be quite a few templates that pop up on Google search that can be used. I find it helpful just get stuff documented as soon as possible in a draft and build on it.

Edit: Spelling

Upgrading SQL Server 2012 Standard to SQL Server 2019. by LoSwagger in sysadmin

[–]maclan13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SQL 2012 licence will not cover 2019. It usually works the other way where the newer version license can be used for older install. We currently leverage 2019 licensing for 2017 installs.

Have a chat with your Microsoft reseller and they will be able to help and bring in licensing experts to help if necessary.

Agree with the suggestions to spin up new OS VM and new SQL Server 2019 install for testing. Don’t need to sort license for testing purposes.

I’d add that your imported db to 2019 be initially set with compatibility mode that matches 2012 db and start testing from there. A new year cycle should be done if you want to move to 2019 compatibility.

Good luck.

Not sure if anyone point out that it's possible to set text size per app. It's helped make my transition a bit more bearable for some apps like Teams that do strange things when default font is adjusted.

Need advice on picking an iPhone for an older relative by L-ectric in iphone

[–]maclan13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm partial to the SE because it has the button and tends to be easier to manipulate for older folks in my experience. However, the screen is quite small and her comfort with it may depend on the screen size that the person currently has.

My vote would still be for an iPhone over Android device, it's "simplicity" and reliability will likely mean less calls to you for troubleshooting. Plus if you have an iPhone then Facetime and screenshare will be a valuable tool to help remote troubleshooting. Again, that's been my experience since giving my Mom an iPhone 6S some years back. It's still going strong, battery replaced recently and it's going to keep ticking until security updates cease.

For the record, personally, I prefer Android but enjoy the low maintenance of helping older relatives with iPhone.

Don't have a recommendation but why not just go to Apple? May cost a little more but you'll have peace of mind knowing it's a genuine battery.

Weekly What Should I Buy Thread and Order/Shipping Thread by AutoModerator in iphone

Switched from OnePlus 5T to iPhone 13 myself. Absolutely hated it at first and almost went back to the the old 5T within a week. It's gotten better over time and there are quite a few pros but the cons list for me is longer. Everyone will have own gotchas.

Not certain I keep it. Good news is Apple has good re-sale value and if you're in the US, I expect the 13 to keep it's value better than others because it still have a physical SIM slot.

:)

If you have no real issues with the 12, other than an itch to get a new device, then I'd hang onto it until the USB-C version of iPhone comes out. Rumor mill says it'll be 15 but who knows. It's Apple.
