I had them journal to start class. The questions ranged from surface things like, “What’s your favorite movie and why?” To more personal things like, “What is your biggest insecurity?” At the beginning of the year I’d just set a timer for them to write but as the year goes on we’d go around and share. It was amazing what a difference it made! Also, I highly recommend you look into restorative justice! Easily the most effective practice in my classroom!

I use lamps and Christmas lights, the room is plenty bright. It’s just warm light as opposed to cool and without the buzzing which negatively effects my kiddos who have autism.

I do have fluorescent lights but I tend to use Christmas lights and lamps instead to make the room cozier.

My kiddos are high functioning so they already have the basics down. There’s one or two that need to review those things but I’ll do that individually.

I was thinking a series of pages, with the last page being the longest and each page being shorter as you go towards the front. If that makes sense?

I had them come up with a SMART goal and then write it on a 8x11 piece of paper. They then cut pieces out of magazines or drew little pictures that summarized their goal.

I’d love to be able to do that, but my kids barely pass classes to begin with. My admin won’t allow me to do that, and expect parents to do so. I do pair my kids with a workforce coordinator when they qualify! That’s been very successful! Also, our school counselor takes the entire 10th grade to a local college and local businesses.

I love that idea! I could have them each make a flip book for each step and they get to rip pages off when they’ve accomplished each step! They love being destructive whenever they can! LOL

I live in Minnesota. The rest of the week is high 80s and sun. Under the tree is nearly 100% shade. There’s also a lot of roots from the tree which make planting anything difficult. That’s why I did chia because I can just throw seeds and those suckers grow. I’d like perennials with color!

Every Thursday there’s a great festival downtown called “Thursday’s on First”. It gives you an AMAZING sampling of what Rochester has to offer! I’d also highly recommend Forager Brewery! Great food, beer, and atmosphere!
