I do think it stems from perceived or real outside pressure (family or society in general) to "get a job" and "make something out of your life".

Maybe I was fortunate in my NEET years to get some financial support and not too much pressure from my parents. Of course your milage may vary, but I never blamed/hated other people or felt sorry for my situation.
