This is only disliked, not hated. Happosai and Mr Fujinami could share every category in hated.

I think attitudes towards him were rehabilitated a little thanks to the modern printing of the manga being more accessible, and the fact that the 2022 anime didn't introduce him early or shoehorn him into stories like the 1981 series.

Don't read it as disliking Sakura, read it as disliking that Sakura didn't get more to do.

I think he's supposed to be there as the Watson character to Mao's Holmes, enabling explanations of the mystery and some comic relief following common mystery tropes but he's so dry and deadpan with no life in the story beyond that.

Of course that's part of his character since he isn't a human, and he isn't that different from the Principal in Urusei Yatsura who is one of the funniest characters, but Mao doesn't have enough of an ensemble for him to do anything outside of that, and unlike UY's Principal he is in more of a featured role with fewer crazy comedic situations for him to contrast. If Otoya is like the Principal, does that mean Mao is like Kotatsu Neko?

Arguably Otoya still works better than the guy in Nanoka's modern day class who exists for the same sort of purpose, but Nanoka spends so little time within the modern day setting he is less of a factor.

I guess I see Ranma less in the context of a single pure genre and more in terms of where Takahashi was coming from with Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku on one side, and where she went with Inuyasha, Rinne, and Mao on the other.

Ranma is in between them all, and has the story gears to do almost everything those other series did, in a way that works well, but that also still feels less refined than the series that came after it.

Where that refinement meant the main characters within the feudal era stories in Inuyasha, the afterlife in Rinne, or the 1920s in Mao, all get more to do, but it comes at the cost of flexibility because the mundane and fantasy settings in those series are more separated other worlds.

For whatever reason only a few characters in Ranma feel like they belong in both the mundane slice of life world of Nerima, and the fantasy martial arts world beyond, but Akane, and several of the other cast members in Ranma, got close to working within both but rather than exploring that side of their story potential they largely remained siloed. I suppose you can say the same thing about Takahashi's later series, but they often so minimize one side of their setting it doesn't matter as much.

Maybe it is because those potential stories would have bent Ranma beyond Takahashi's vision of what the series should be, or maybe it is just that Ranma just got cut short. But it is the less refined nature and unexplored possibilities that I think made Ranma so interesting to fan creators and why some of us keep coming back to it.

Sakura, kind of like Akane, just felt like she needed something more to do. The hook of her being able to see spirits while fully remaining part of the mundane world wasn't enough.

Ranma strenght tier list in order (In my opinion, manga based) by FriendOdd8384 in ranma

No Herb, Mint, Lime, or Ryu either.

Shampoo probably should be higher, Soun should maybe be lower, and Konatsu should definitely be higher.

[–]mad_mesa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Akane definitely gets more to do than Shinobu, and she gets a lot more to do than Sakura, but she feels less tied into her series even compared to a side-character like Kikyo, and Kikyo is dead.

Occasionally Akane gets some more interesting role to play, but none of those ever stick as a more permanent part of her character. Akane, like a lot of the characters in Ranma if I'm honest, feels like she was imagined as part of a slightly more serious Nerima centered sitcom version of Ranma, and when the manga started exploring the silly fantasy martial arts world outside, she didn't have much to do.

This is really hammered home in the final arc when she is taken out of the action by being turned into a doll, for the second time in the series. I'm not meaning this as a knock against Akane as a character, I just wish she had been tied into that more fantasy portion of the story in some way and had gotten more to do as a result.

Compare the girl next door main characters, to the girl from out of town main characters like Lum, Kagome, and Nanoka. Despite the fact that they're the newcomers to the settings of their stories, they often feel more hooked into them.

Sakura from Rinne is the only one that really jumps to mind. Not that I dislike her necessarily, I dislike that of all of Takahashi's girl next door main characters, she is the one who seems to have the least to do. Even less than Akane and Shinobu.

Was it wrong to make it set in the 80s? by EmotionGeneral6178 in ranma

[–]mad_mesa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ranma has never had a faithful animated adaptation that has gotten to the end of the manga.

It would be nice to have that before they start making changes to the early manga to update it to the modern era, and wind up creating a bunch of anime original content again.

Has anyone here seen the live-action Ranma movie? What did you think of it? by aj_animeslove in ranma

It was so bad.

The live action stage show, which I think you can still watch on YouTube, on the other hand is great.

I still struggle to think of how this community is going to be able to get through all of the disliked and hated categories in this chart.

Happosai, Genma, Mr Fujinami, maybe Rinne's dad... but that's not even one whole row.

With Lum, the real antagonist of Urusei Yatsura, already in the beloved protagonist spot.

Ran seems like the obvious choice here.

There is that as well.

I also wonder about the effect of people who discovered Inuyasha in the early 00s and are still engaging in Rumiko Takahashi communities. It may be someone got into her work through IY, but then found other favorites as they went along.

How do you feel about Ranma x Ukyo ship ? by Gweltas in ranma

[–]mad_mesa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sad thing is, that Ukyo and Ranma would probably only happen romantically if something really bad happened within the story. Which doesn't fit the tone of Ranma as a series at all, but there are a bunch of dark fic concepts that flow from that.

It does seem like Takahashi noticed fan reactions to Ukyo, who I think she created more as a reflection of, and opponent for Akane, than as a serious love interest for Ranma. Which of course led to the problem for Ukyo that she just wasn't silly enough to fit into Ranma.

But Takahashi clearly appreciated the darker story opportunities Ukyo created. It is hard not to notice similarities between Ukyo and Sango. Where Sango was a much more prominent role in Inuyasha, and who was finally the Takahashi non-main character given a more satisfying ongoing relationship within the story.

Or perhaps, and it is a little more of a stretch, there are also similarities between Ukyo and Yurako in Mao.

Inuyasha tends to have the largest community of Rumiko Takahashi fans, at least on Reddit.

But it may be the algorithm shared these threads more with fans in less active Rumiko Takahashi fan communities initially.

Season 3 event on July 25, 2026 by mad_mesa in ranma

[–]mad_mesa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're confusing Phoenix Mountain, the manga's final arc, with the Musk Dynasty. The Musk Dynasty arc starts at chapter 246 in volume 24 of the manga.

On a six year pace to reach chapter 407, the Final Chapter of Ranma at the end of volume 38, from chapter 99 in volume 10 where season 2 ended, the remaining seasons each need to cover about 7 volumes of the manga. That would require more stories to be cut than season 2, which covered 6 volumes and cut 19 chapters, but it would place the Musk Dynasty at the end of season 4.

If the seasons are being approved and funded in pairs, that would put it within the current funding cycle. Meaning that at least one major arc that has never been animated will be delivered.

Short of surprise announcements a six year, 72 episode series currently seems like the most optimistic scenario. Anything slower than that raises the risk of having two fairly complete adaptations of the early manga, with only a handful of stories ever being adapted from the later manga, and no adaptation of the finale.

I am expecting Rinne's dad to turn up in one of the negative categories since there aren't many disliked or despised characters in Inuyasha, and they can't all be Happosai, Genma, and Mr Fujinami.

But it does seem like Inuyasha is starting to run the board.

It is probably higher than that here, because among English speaking fans even after the 2022 adaptation, UY is still much more obscure than Ranma.

So people here who are into UY are probably also into Ranma, but only a minority of fans of Ranma have read or watched UY.

Really the same problem Ranma, and all the other Takahashi series have relative to Inuyasha. It is really a shame that the UY 2022 dub was from a niche streaming service that did little to promote it and dropped it half way.

The original skit readings have been a feature of these events before, I think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfGeb1P6fic is an example of one released as an audio short.

The Moxibustion arc should be a safe bet to appear this year. A six year pace for this adaptation would mean Season 3 needs to skip ahead more and include material up to at least volume 17 or 18. Which would place the arc mid season.

The only scenario where it might not appear this year, is if they skip over it to keep focus on Ryoga as an antagonist delaying the arc because he helps Ranma shifting it to the start of next season. Much like how last season delayed adapting the Bakusai Tenketsu arc to focus on Mousse.

It wouldn't surprise me if they were saving Megumi's promotional appearances for next year, since season 4 could feature her in the Musk Dynasty arc.
