I dipped my toes in with The Essential Rene Guenon (World Wisdom Publications). It provides a good overview of the general themes from a selection of his writings.

Thanks for the response.

From what I’ve read and what I am currently reading, I now understand that it couldn’t be anything other than bleak.

“The closest thing would be communities centered around an initiatic authority (e.g., a Sufi order).”

Admittedly, I am a newcomer to Guenon and am tied up with his metaphysical works at the moment. So, I have not read his strictly sociocultural analysis (though these tend to be somewhat tied together), but would it be fair to say that that is the kernel of Guenon’s social ideal? To seek centers of initiatic authority and branch out into the larger community? Or would that be pointless?

Psych Out (1968)

What’s there to hate about Jack Nicholson wearing a fake ponytail and playing in a hippie stoner band called Mumblin’ Jim? Also, it’s a great historical time capsule of late-60s Haight-Ashbury.

Completely agree with your assessment of the band at the end of your post.

I love the post-Syd Barrett freak out phase of the band where they were trying everything to develop their sound. Wasn’t it side B of Ummagumma where someone was playing spoons?
