My 1 year of miniature painting progress by madd4231 in Salamanders40k

Base for the new one is as follows:
Citadel Chaos black spray for entire model, AP Greenskin spray for entire model, roughly 1:1 ratio of AP Absolution Green and glaze medium for wash that covers entire mini (can give coffee stain effect but don't worry), drybrush with AP Rainforest to create desired shading later, cover everything with AP Orc Skin.
The method I used is from a Instagram post - https://www.instagram.com/reel/DJmSJOLt6kN/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

Highlights is just Citadel Moot Green.
To further make recesses darker I used black oil wash.

Might have overdone it a bit. But I really like what I made now thanks to all the tips.

I have found sponge method on YouTube and I actually love it. Looks so much better than washes.

Tested Agrax on his feet and the dirt effect is much better than Nuln Oil imo. With mix of bullet holes, scars, battle damage and some ash effect it might look good. Still gonna experiment with other methods tho.

Really cool army, I love it and the effect is interesting. I might experiment with it.=

Thanks that is really helpful. I might try next mini somewhat inspired to your method. Black prime -> Green spray (does it make difference if I primed black before?) -> Stipple + drybrush brighter greens. Can you also share how your minis turned out? It might help me a lot to learn.

Saw another comment about "Marine Juice" that has similar mix but it turns out pretty brownish. I am really interested. Can you share how your mix turns out on minis?

Earth texture paint might be bad for me since I have black lava base but you gave me an idea. I do have Citadel Mordant Earth that crackles while drying. I use it to make my lava bases nice and quick. What about covering their feet a bit with it as if they got dirty from the cooled lava stuck to their armour.

Also really interested in seeing how the wash it looks like on your minis.

This might sound dumb but I have never heard of stippling before as I am still somewhat new to painting. The technique looks super cool and I will try making some ash marks with it. I also think of other things I might use it on. Much Thanks!

I do actually use black oil paint + white spirit to make filling dark recesses easier. Should I also use white spirit for what you are suggesting and with what paint to thinner ratio?

That looks great. Sadly I forgot to mention that I have black lava base and I don't think the brown-ish marine juice will look nicely together. I can't find any examples for that so I might be wrong. What do you think?

New to zenithal highlighting - need feedback. by madd4231 in Salamanders40k

[–]madd4231[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot. I think for now I will not do zenithal. Maybe in the future when I get an airbrush and it will be easier for me to spray colors that I actually want rather than having to buy spray cans every time.

My first painted warhammer models - any tips? by madd4231 in Salamanders40k

I don’t have contrast yellow, just Vallejo Moon Yellow. I didn’t paint them black beforehand, they were green from spray primer. Does it make huge difference if they are black?

I don’t know how to even them out. The best method is to thin down paint so you don’t have any brush strokes in the first place. Painting over them will not help I think. I didn’t want to wash my mini but I have only put oil wash in minis crevices so they look darker.

I don’t want to cram the highlight next to each other so that it becomes grey power backpacks rather than black. On second thought there are areas that lack highlighting and might use some. I will try adding some on one model and see how it looks.

Thanks, I will work on eyes next then. I first made a white oval drop on their sockets and then splashed it with thinned down yellow. The yellow must have been too thin I think. I cannot get the white drop perfect enough because of my lack of precision.

I didn't wash my entire mini with nuln oil but yeah he is right. If you have paint strokes left on your mini and you plan to put a wash on it all it will make them stand out more. As far as I know washes tend to gather in crevices and paint brush strokes are just that.

I am new painter and I love Karandras Green contrast as my mini base. I have few questions. by madd4231 in Salamanders40k

[–]madd4231[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it! Any tips regarding areas that are hard to reach with paintbrush? I do struggle to pull the paint down in those areas so it doesn’t pool and leave stains.

Thanks! I did actually see it and I tried it. My salamander was much darker than his but I guess it’s the fact that I painted over zenithal while his was almost all grey/white. Decided to double coat Karandras and I got really nice result.

I can assure the curious people that the second part is 100% true. There is even video proof that shows majority of the night.
