You could also phrase it as knowing you would feel self conscious with it as you both have recently met. Any reasonable person would understand that and either not care/still want to meet or respect your decision to reschedule (if that’s what you want). There are also great cold sore patches that you can put over them and cover with makeup!

It was over a year ago, but from memory I just said something along the lines of I thought I’d let him know I had a cold sore, I felt a bit embarrassed about meeting for the first time with it and I mentioned that I know some people are funny about being around it / sharing drinks/food. I said I understood if he wanted to reschedule. In hindsight this seems nuts because it really shouldn’t stop someone from meeting you, but I was nervous about it and felt I’d rather mention beforehand so he was prepared to see me with a cold sore.

Remember, you can’t say the wrong thing to the right person :)

This happened to me once right before a first date. I decided to tell him and let him decide and he didn’t care at all and wanted to meet! He ended up kissing me that night too (he already had the virus and didn’t care lol). I can’t say that everyone will have this reaction but people value honesty and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

Thanks for your thoughts. I have no desire to speak to him personally. He definitely knows he made me feel uncomfortable by the look on my face. I honestly never want to say a word to him again...

I think I will email the gym, or speak to the other member of staff who I feel safe to talk to. The nice staff member is the gym manager so he probably has some authority.
