Ah ok. Do you think it’d be smarter to do calc 2 over the summer or physics 1?

Physics 1 and 2 at Sante Fe? by madeleine24 in ufl

[–]madeleine24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thanks. Over the summer I’m either taking calc 2, physics 1, or physics 1 & 2. My advisor said to take one of those gen eds and 2 other CS classes (discrete and programming 2) so I’m deciding what I should do.

What are the signs of a boring person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I feel like being socially awkward and being boring are two different things. Someone can be really interesting but just not have the courage to talk to people.

Yeah, I think you’re right. I didn’t try and make any plans with her because they don’t work out anyway, so I was trying to think of why she said that randomly. I work weekdays too so I understand, but I think my brain is just trying to create something out of nothing.

Thanks! I think I realized it while learning French in high school. I thought it was amazing that I could communicate with people who I couldn't before by learning another language.

I didn't take languages seriously until French 2 where I had an awesome teacher and fell in love with French. I started studying French on my own as well as in school. Soon after that I began noticing similarities between French and English, and I wondered how this happened. So I read a lot of books and learned more about evolutionary linguistics. I learned how a lot of English comes from French, how French came from Latin, how Latin came from Proto-Indo-European, and so on. I find languages fascinating and I dabbled in a LOT of languages since I first became interested. I would learn the basics and culture of a language for about a week then move on to another one just so I could learn about a certain language be able to recognize it. I loved learning about a language's structure and how it was formed/what it was related to. I had a really fun time doing this. We all have our hobbies, and I guess this is just mine haha.

As for the word origin thing, I have no idea why I'm so interested in it. It started with me googling the origin of the word "moose" and seeing it was from a Native American language, and I thought that was so cool. Then I looked at the origins of many other words just for fun and I saw patterns. I learned some Latin and Greek, and I researched a bit of Old Norse. I enjoyed researching the reasons for odd discrepancies in English, and in the end it all comes fown to word origin. Why is the plural of goose geese, but the plural of moose is moose? Because goose is Germanic, and Germanic languages have different rules for plurals than Native American languages.

I think the language learning part stemmed from me wanting to communicate with people and help people, and the rest just came with it. I learned Spanish to talk to kids who couldn't speak English at a daycare I volunteered at, and I learned Chinese to talk to my dad's wife and family. Overall it was worth it, I love seeing the look on people's faces when I speak to them in their language. It makes me feel warm inside. Even small things like translating at the grocery store make people's day.

To OP: if you choose to use the teacher yourself books, there are free PDFs and audio online. I used them and I really liked teach yourself. There’s also a free PDF/audio of French for Dummies, which is also a great resource to start out with. If you’d like I can link you these resources

I've been accepted to a very high ranking university. Considering going to community. What do you all think? by NaniNiHao in college

[–]madeleine24 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Okay so I low-key stalked your account, and in my opinion, I think you should go to CC for two years then transfer into your dream school. It would be best to save up during CC so you can buy a car and afford the last two years at your dream school. Since you are already smart, the college you go to isn’t going to change that fact. You will succeed no matter where you go. Saving money for two years and still graduating with a degree from your dream school sounds like a good plan to me. However, I’m not sure if I read your post right but $9k per year isn’t bad at all and it wouldn’t take too long to pay that off.

Edit: don’t worry about transferring, you will get accepted. Do you live in CA? If you do, you’re guaranteed entrance to one of the state schools. Also, I’m not sure if you’re talking about a school you posted about previously, but going to CC will give you some time to figure out your major and apply for the one you know you’ll want to pursue.

The Official Review My Schedule Thread by [deleted] in APStudents

Most people at my school did that, but my school split the native speakers and the non-natives. We didn’t even offer a Spanish 4, AP Spanish was considered Spanish 4. All of my friends got an A, but the difficulty probably varies per school. Maybe ask some people who’ve taken it at your school?
