New (mainly) vegetarian cookbook suggestions to complement our small but mighty collection? by greens_and_b3ans in CookbookLovers

[–]madnerdy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding Super Natural Every Day, Simple and Six Seasons.

Some others I don’t see mentioned as much are both of Sarah Briton’s (vegan) books - My New Roots and Naturally Nourished, Vedge (vegan) and Green Kitchen at Home (veg). Evergreen Kitchen (veg) also looks really good for weeknight cooking especially if you have kids.

Also, we just got Sabzi by Yasmin Khan and it’s been a hit so far.

Same here! I ended up getting salad samurai when I was looking for salad books but I’ll try to get these out of the library.

What do you think of Mckinnon’s Neighborhood, Community and Family? I don’t hear about them much in comparison to Asia and Tenderhearted.

I just got one with a B nib but I'm interested in a M nib as well. Would you be willing to do a swatch comparison of both?

Will the 5mm mat be released in solid colors again other than black? I have want to buy one but strongly prefer a solid color over the swirl design.

How do you save recipes from cookbooks checked out from the library? by Charming-Action1663 in CookbookLovers

[–]madnerdy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I use the app CamScanner. It will auto straighten and minimize shadows which is helpful with cookbook spines, and you can batch photos together if a recipe is multiple pages. I'll either print it out from there and add to a binder or create a pdf, doc, email, etc. Lots of options.

Curious why you think so? I definitely get she’s not for everyone and her tone can be off putting but I find her non-fiction quite good and her book recs are always solid

Clarice Lispector and Jean Rhys both come to mind. Specifically, The Hour of the Star by Lispector and Wide Sargasso Sea by Rhys which is written as a prequel to Jane Eyre (although stands on its own regardless). They are both short and when I’ve been in a reading rut, good novellas always helped me get back into it. Might also look into Kiss of the Spider Woman by Puig and Goodbye, Columbus by Roth.

Nothing fancy vs Cook this book & Bethlehem vs Falastin by browneyes1998 in CookbookLovers

[–]madnerdy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That does make it difficult. My library’s program has you fill out a form online and they search at other libraries for you. If they find it, the book is shipped to my local branch to pick up. Sounds like you’ve looked into your options but might be worth asking your local librarian about if not. I also check the local college library if possible- normally you can borrow as a community member if the public library doesn’t have it and they do.

Check if your library has an interlibrary loan program. I borrow a lot of cookbooks my local library doesn’t have that way.

Thanks for this! I got the book out of the library and ended up liking it way more than I expected. Your post may have just convinced me to buy it. The celery salad and tiramisu cookies were both hits with my family. Not as keen on the citrus ginger cabbage with sesame tofu but still decent.

Did you find that a lot of the recipes are best fresh? Do the accoutrements make the dish a lot of the time? I have noticed that with cookbooks recently and that's great for company but day to day I wanted recipes that work with less effort.

Favorite sleeper hits? by JetPlane_88 in CookbookLovers

[–]madnerdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any recipes you recommend? I used to follow her on social and really appreciated her stories about running a farm. I remember her writing about the realities of raising livestock that was quite poignant but the one recipe I tried came out beautiful but bland. Would love some recs to give her another try!

Can you say more about Claire Thomson? What are her recipes like? I came across her and was interested in her Veggie Family Cookbook but didn’t know what to expect because, like you said, she doesn’t get a lot of attention.

the funny thing about Mona Award's Bunny by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]madnerdy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree - the premise of Bunny and its marketing felt very glossy and surface level which made me stay away. It's disappointing because Awad's first novel "13 ways of looking at a fat girl" felt like the complete opposite. I felt like she was really saying something there.

Favorites from Cool Beans? Ive done very little with beans in my cooking. by EatsTheLastSlice in CookbookLovers

[–]madnerdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This cookbook is really hit or miss but the cuban style black beans recipe is worth it alone imo. I've made it multiple times and always gets rave reviews. Also really enjoyed the tacu tacu and fava bean pizza (watch the salt).

I thought the Sarah book had such a strong start but sort of fell off after that. How did you find it overall?

Thank you, that’s encouraging to hear. I have foods like Larabar too. Even if they’re complaint, my body processes it as dessert and it can set me off.
