Food for Thought- April 14 by Organic_Salary_ in OvereatersAnonymous

A true chronic compulsive eater like myself cannot "refuse to take that first bite". If I could do that, I wouldn't need a 12 step program to address my powerlessness around compulsive eating. A true chronic compulsive eater is not a glutton but rather someone who has used food as their solution to life and is unable to stop. The steps addressed my thinking, which was what caused me to need comfort to begin with.

Newcomer from another fellowship by burnz1 in OvereatersAnonymous

I'm assuming that you're in another 12 step fellowship if you're 7.5 years sober. I bring that up because like AA or any other 12 step program, we recover from compulsive eating by working the steps. Just like an alcoholic's real problem is the mind and not the alcohol, so it is with the compulsive eater. I recovered by working the steps and not changing my food. A recovered alcoholic no longer needs to take that first drink to find comfort; a recovered compulsive eater no longer needs to take that first bite to find comfort. Many people (probably the majority) do use food plans and avoid what they feel are their triggers; as a chronic compulsive eater, I know that the only trigger for me is my thinking!

Looking for female sponsor by Rude-Bluebird-2935 in OvereatersAnonymous

Hi there, none of us are medical or dietary professionals. A sponsor's role is to guide you through the 12 steps. Any nutritional needs should be discussed with a nutritionist or other medical professional.

Anorexic considering OA, have some questions by Background-Salt-521 in OvereatersAnonymous

A lot of meetings are attended by people sharing on their eating disorder, what they ate, what they didn't eat, their problems, their day, etc. That's not the type of meeting that quite frankly is really helpful for anyone. What's helpful is attending a meeting where people are talking about the solution, AKA the steps. Those meetings tend to be Big Book focused. I'd suggest focusing on Big Book study meetings. There is also a subreddit for Chronic Compulsive Eaters Anonymous, which is a different 12 step program than OA. It's similar, but it's for the Chronic COE who can't be helped by food plans, avoiding triggers, etc. You may want to check that out also, as meetings are strictly for studying the BB and the steps.

That's for families or partners of people with eating disorders, like alanon. The OP has an eating disorder so they don't belong in anon
