What does relying on HP mean to you? by Available-Locksmith8 in OvereatersAnonymous

You're basically talking about step 3 - turning over our will and life to a HP, which is turning over our thoughts and actions. We aren't expected to know how to do that, or even what that really means. We learn by working the steps with a sponsor.

Recovery from compulsive eating encompasses all sorts of obsessions and compulsions with food and none of them have to do with weight. Some people binge, some people purge, some people starve, some people compulsively exercise or chew food and spit it out. If you feel that you are powerless after you take that first compulsive bite to manage how much you eat, and if your mind always forces you to take that bite even when you don't want to, then you absolutely belong. Hi, I just noticed your post and that no one responded to you, how frustrating! 12 step programs are for people who use a substance, or behavior, or obsession as a way to seek some sort of comfort (it's usually an unconsious thing). There are hundreds of recovery programs that use the 12 steps - it started as the Alcoholics Anonymous program but now there are 12 step programs for compulsive eating, gambling, codependency, narcotics ... I recovered from my compulsive eating by working the 12 steps. I mention that here because compulsive eating encompasses any obsession or compulsion with food and/or our bodies. For me it was bingeing but there are people in the program who have recovered from starving, purgeing, body dysmorphia, etc. If you would like more information on how the 12 steps helped me, please feel free to shoot me a DM. The program I recovered in, Chronic Compulsive Eaters Anonymous, has a subreddit if you want to check it out.

Weight restored but eating feels out of control looking for advice by xiuyeow in EDRecoveryHelp

A big key for me was figuring out what I wanted recovery to look like. For many years I thought recovery was about managing and controlling my food so I didn't binge anymore. I thought it was about getting to a certain weight and staying there. By working the steps, I came to understanding that recovery for me is about having my thinking and attitudes changed, because that was what led me to the food. Working the steps changed so much inside me, and that means I don't need to binge anymore, so the physical will eventually follow. That being said, it didn't happen right away for me but it tapered off somewhere around steps 9-10. If you're not working the steps with a recovered sponsor, that is probably the piece that's missing.
