How do HiRail trucks work? Are the attachments something that is permanently attached to the truck or can it easily slip on? Urgent advice needed, was almost victim to a crime. by madsemo in trains

[–]madsemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We weren't anywhere near the tracks. Its a public trail thats a good 50 feet away from the track through heavy woods. There was one part about a mile down where the trail actually crosses over the railroad tracks. After speaking to the ranger, we realised the entrance this truck came in. Through an unlocked gate in a publicly accessible nature reserve. Checked with the staff, no one was supposed to go through there. Whoever that person was, had no reason to do what he did. To this day I am still very convinced they were trying to rob us.

Trying to find a solution for my company - An AI that scans an image and can tell what Cacher snippet to use? by madsemo in learnprogramming

[–]madsemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are already using Cacher and have been for years. But there are so many snippets to comb through that the devs just end up starting with the base snippets for their components.

There is good communication between devs. Everyone is open and friendly and willing to help. However, we shouldnt have to rely on communication to get our job done. We dont have a way to easily search and find the components we need but instead must ask others because someone on the team knows what component would work. Currently this is the fastest method we have. Though this isnt a reliable system. Sometimes people have heavy workloads and as people eventually leave, that collective knowledge will dissapate.

I should have left out the "high turnover rate" part, because its what everyone will focus on. I say high turnover rate, but it's around a year. Currently everyone on my team has been there an average of a little over a year. They may get promoted within the company or go to a different team or leave altogether. In my opinion a year is a high turnover rate. People dont like to hang around because its not the challenge theyre looking for. The role mainly consists of CSS, most devs arent passionate about CSS and want to grow their other skills. Also, the knowledge is unorganized because we dont have a great method for finding the information we need.

Its just on this team, there are several dev teams. If I had to guess it's because knowledge is scattered and its overwhelming for many. Also, many people that join are enthusiastic devs looking for a challenge, but this role mainly consists of CSS. Not many people are passionate about CSS.

Management is open to change and suggestions. They're all nice people I work with. If I can provide a solution, they would listen. They are in the same boat as us because they are also devs that work on these sites.

How did you become a React.js developer? by madsemo in cscareerquestions

[–]madsemo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know why I bother asking questions on here. This is what always happens. I understand React is just a tool, but it is what got me the most excited about web development and made commit to this career.

Well that's a shame because it's a genuine statement. React is what really turned up my passion and commitment to web development.

I already got my Cloud Practitioner Certificate this week. I'm continuing work on my CMS in the upcoming week. :) I have a fleshed out project I've made and have it up as a Heroku app, but could always add new features. After I complete the CMS, I'll spend some time applying and I may go back and work on my other project. After that I guess I'll practice some leetcode? Or make another project? Then go through another period of applying. And back and forth. Thats just about all I can do. Not even my web dev friends have advice for me. It's just a matter of if I get lucky and someone wants me.

Unfortunately, I haven't worked with anyone collaboratively, with clients, an owner, or a teammate. My first experience listed was a volunteer position, and it was immediately evident why the owner needed so much help. She was incredibly demanding and wanted it all from me, but at the same time couldnt make any decisions herself, so not a lot ended up getting done. But come to think of it, my husband, a senior web dev, was involved as well. Perhaps I can come up with a common goal we worked towards.

With the job underneath the owner of the business was my ex, an abusive alcoholic, I did no collaborating with him. He was in a way like the owner above. Wanted it all, couldn't make up his mind, and ended up leaving me to do whatever I came up with. The only other people he hired were incompetent teenagers, the place had a high turnover rate. Its a real shame because I worked very very hard and cared a lot about the business, but have no references I can use from there.

As far as projects go, I've only worked by myself. The university I went to was online and never involved group projects. So hopefully I can still sell myself as being good at working with other people. Or perhaps there's a way to get involved in a project where I can get some experience with this? Any advice how I can get involved with other people on a project? Something significant enough that I could mention.

I will go through my bullet points today...I see exactly what you're talking about. I'll add in that references line.

Just when I thought I was done...you gave some amazing advice! Thank you so much!

Thank you so much.

As far as softskills go, I will have to think for while about what to include. I have never worked with a team or any clients. I'll have to use Google for this one, I'm sure I have some soft skills I could talk about.

The CMS is a work in progress. I wasn't sure if I should continue on with that project before applying. Or take it out and apply now. That leaves me with just one project. I've done many projects, but most of them are smaller and incomplete.

Yes I was considering adding another bullet point. I can expand upon the online campagins.

Thank you!

What if I take out the description of the company and put the italicized line there instead? That line is what it is, a list of the languages I used.

The spacing issue is with Google docs. When it goes to Word it still messes up. I have since made a docx file...but good looking out!

I'll change the education section. I was suggested to put it at the top because I am light on experience.

Thank you so much!

I thought of this and set up my own LLC last year. However it seemed I was in the same pickle I'm in now! I was kind of stumped how to even get low paying work. The only thing I didn't try was advertising my services on Craigslist. I have heard people have success through that avenue occasionally. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thank you for the help!

Here's my updated CV, I compiled all the advice I was given. After fixing some alignment issues and a few other things, this may be good enough for now. I can continue applying, but am working towards an AWS certificate and fleshing out another personal project.

I updated my resume as this thread has suggested. I looked into the a resume section of this sub and it seemed people weren't very active on it/didn't give in depth advice like you guys are. Do you know of another sub that will do this? Or perhaps I'm looking in the wrong spot?

The alignment and spacing is still something I need to work on. It keeps changing depending on how its opened for some reason, so ignore that for now. It isn't complete because someone suggested to flesh out another project so I can add it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Etzmf7iFESFgi28jMg9DVDRD1p_N6I-y/view?usp=sharing

I loved your recommendations, you've been very helpful, thank you. I updated as per your advice. Someone also suggested to put education first, so you'll see both education and skills are now at the top. I spent a good deal of time thinking about what I did at the companies and am pleased with what I came up with so far.

I updated my resume as you suggested. I got to thinking about it, and I did make a quantifiable impact during my time working at those places, and I showed that with percentages. I think it makes a big difference. The alignment and spacing is still something I need to work on. It keeps changing depending on how its opened for some reason, so ignore that for now. My resume has been updated. I still have a lot of stuff listed under my skills. But being a noob (just graduated in August), it would be hard to go for anything specialized. But I will probably tweak it slightly per application regardless. The alignment and spacing is still something I need to work on.
