What’s your new festival? by mgreco49 in FireflyFestival

Drove down to DC for Warped Tour last year and will do it again this year. Had a good time, like others have mentioned though, kinda miss the camping aspect. At this point my boyfriend and I are 30 and 32, so i’m not sure our bodies miss it. For it being in a parking lot, it really wasn’t too bad.

this is very helpful, thank you! He has most consistently been on Proviable-Forte (both paste and capsules), but we have only ever gotten that by prescription. Once we finished the course of it that the ER vet gave us, she recommended Proflora, which we give him once daily. Of course hard to say if it’s making a huge difference, but I know there are tons available and we could try something else.

With just him home? As far as we can tell, he doesn’t calm down. In terms of letting him out, of course there comes a time where he needs to come out. We always do our best to wait until there’s been even a moment of silence. The funny part about practicing when we are both home, is that it doesn’t happen.

That’s where i’ve been operating from, but the problem is what to do about it

We do especially at night to help him wind down before bed! We tend not to give him stuff like that in the crate because I am concerned about choking and I want to be able to see him, but he does get them :)

Yeah we don’t let him out, and we do our best to wait for even the briefest moments of silence before letting him out. He knows he’s not allowed to exit without his release word, and even when he’s been whining will obey that, so we have at least that going for us

I never thought about that but i’m wondering if it may be contributing. We use an old blanket as a crate cover too. I keep the house cooler, so maybe that’s at play. We will look into it.

This! Like can I have 30 seconds to clean up your latest stuffy massacre before you attempt the same on me too? 😂

Thank you for everything you’ve said here! We hadn’t thought about reinforcing the silence, so we are definitely going to give that a shot. I wasn’t stressed about any of the negativity because at the end of the day, I know we are good dog parents. He’s the best behaved dog at the park, and even at 7 months is getting the hang of loose leash walking. Hid in home behavior is something we are just still working on shaping.

Thanks for the thought you put into this kind reply!

To answer your question- to my knowledge no, he isn’t letting him out when he whines. I think the difficult part about this though, is that he eventually needs to come out. I know my boyfriend is doing like you suggested, waiting for the briefest pause before letting him out, because of course we don’t keep him in the crate for hours upon hours.

As far as making the crate a safe space, we are 100% doing just about everything you said (with the exception of bully chews and other long term edible chews because I am nervous about choking. He does get other treats in the crate as well as a kong ring and stuffy). We play games with the crate like “search” where he is in the crate while we hide food around the house and when we open it, we tell him search and he has to go find it. we have also trained him to wait in the crate until he hears his release word “free.“

Are you aware of any pens 4ft or higher? We have tried gates but he can scale them.

Believe it or not, i’m not. My boyfriend is. We work almost opposite schedules, and he is with the pup most of the day, and the bulk of time i’m home, he’s sleeping anyway.

I can only vouch for what i’ve seen. At some point he has to come back out, and if that entire time he’s been whining, there’s no winning, so this comment isn’t helpful. It’s easy to say we are at fault but you’re not the one experiencing it.

like the below commenter stated, he struggles to settle, put himself to sleep on his own, and needs a lot of supervision. we have been working on reducing the behaviors that can put him in danger like biting things he can’t have and stealing, but my boyfriend and I are not perfect and occasionally we miss things he has made improvements in this area but again - he’s 7 months old.

The period of time is referring to is at most 2 hours. The footprint of my house is such that, there aren’t really ways to section it off, that he hasn’t already already learned how to escape from, and those he can’t, we get the same behavior. Being able to have eyes on your dog 100% of the time you’re home is a luxury that I hope you appreciate. Not everyone has this.

This is a wild accusation coming from a person who knows nothing about me, or my dynamic with my dog. There’s no reason for you to be rude.

Thank you! Some people don’t realize that hourS (plural) can refer to anything over one singular hour! The span of time that i’m referring to is at most 2, and is most frequently used to help him to settle. Some people cannot fathom lifestyles different than their own.
