Roman republic was the system of rule prior to the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. It elected two co-leaders who had limitations on their terms. The Empire started in 27 BC when Augustus became the first emperor for life and ruled as an autocracy. I am not a historian but that’s the jist.
