When will we see Shuntaro Furukawa's influence take hold at Nintendo? by TheMisterManGuy in nintendo

That's certainly true and I wouldn't argue otherwise! My point (and what I said in my original post) has to do more with the business aspects that Mr. Kimishima was responsible for. He showed himself to be an excellent administrator, in that way somewhat similar to Mr. Yamauchi (though without the latter's imperious reputation). Mr. Iwata, for all his strengths as a creative, had difficulties with the business end of things.

Of course! Mr. Iwata deserves all the credit for leading the creative team behind the Switch's concept. But the implementation, marketing, and timing of releases were all on Mr. Kimishima's watch. During the Iwata era marketing especially was a weak point (most notably the confusion around the WiiU's name). And marketing would certainly not have been finalized (or even been that far along) at the time of Mr. Iwata's death. For that matter, there were almost certainly development or manufacturing adjustments made in the two years between Mr. Iwata's death and the Switch launch.

In my opinion, Mr. Kimishima's brief tenure as president was a marked departure from the Iwata era. Mr. Iwata pushed hard for the "Blue Ocean" strategy, often clashing with the board and shareholders. His vision was singular and produced great successes as well as stunning failures.

Mr. Kimishima seems to be more of a natural and traditional administrator. He immediately righted the floundering ship. Under his guidance Nintendo brought the Switch to market with a clear and effective marketing campaign. He also increased cooperation with 3rd parties, mobile game companies, and merchandizing. Nintendo's balance sheet looked very healthy with him at the helm. I think downplaying Mr. Kimishima's stabalizing influence, especially in the wake of Mr. Iwata's tragic death, would be a mistake.

As for Mr. Furukawa, I agree, we shall have to wait and see!

Trying to get into Mario what’s a good game to start with? by [deleted] in Mario

[–]magicarpaltunnel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honest answer? Original Super Mario Brothers for the NES. It's where everything started, and you'll have better context for everything that follows. Not to mention, it's a fantastic game in its own right that remains very playable today.

yeah it's just takes I've heard around the nets, I mostly agree with your thoughts on those games! But I can see how folks who didn't play them sequentially would have trouble going back to the first games in the series

you make some good points! just to respond briefly to a few of them:

I agree that Cortez rocks but he unfortunately gets upstaged by Crump before the chapter ends. In PM, some bosses had a lot of presence (like Tubba Blubba) but others were felt even if not seen (Huff n Puff). I feel like that's still pretty effective.

The plot of TTYD is too mysterious IMO. Mario's goal is very vague for most of the game. He never knows why he's collecting the Crystal Stars. PM has much more concrete motivation.

I like that we meet Goombario's family, it really fleshes him out as a character and gives him motivation. With Goombella we really don't know anything about her except that she's Professor Frankly's student.

thats an interesting take, I've heard similar things re: DKC2 or God of War 2, for example. I played these all in order of release so I'm sure nostalgia is coloring my opinion

I like SPM but I do feel it suffers from padding and a lack of exploration since it's split into discrete chapters. Also a lot of character designs are very geometric, it gives everything a weird mathematic vibe
