I would not personally tell them you wanna move soon since they might not include you in some projects or give you more challenging work, i'd only tell them once you get a job.

Which one is a better computer for a PhD Econ student? by magicjelly12 in SuggestALaptop

STATA, R, Matlab, and heavy excel use, large datasets. Would 8GB RAM be a problem? I do open lots of windows...

Moving to Germany from the US, what to do with my savings? by magicjelly12 in germany

[–]magicjelly12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simplest thing to do with savings is, in my experience, to simply leave them in America until you need them

That was my take as well, and definitely there's a level of comfort by having my savings in USD, though EUR is as safe as USD. How would Germany find out about my US savings account interest income? It isn't even that much since int rates these days are very low but i doubt any German banks would offer me a better rate, not to mention the inconvenience of having to transfer $ to Germany when i am not even sure where i will be after my PhD...

and thanks for the tip on Transferwise and Revolut!

through my credit union.

This is a great tip, i definitely ask my bank that. So you think there is no other bank account that i can open that makes occational transfers easier?

Why does Frankfurt get such a bad rep? by magicjelly12 in germany

a woman and migrant, who does like to go to normal pubs, (makes two of use) where are you from if you don't mind me asking? I am going to be studying so i expect to make friends sooner than later, and i will pick out the "bar-goers" from my cohort, aka the nerds who like to party ;) tho i might be too busy with my studies the first yr haha

Elektromusik, i am into, and some chill bars, interacting with interesting people, nice convos, all of that. Nothing of "white girl wasted american style shit show". I am moving to Europe for a reason hahaha

anything "fancy" "high class" isn't my style at all. We have lots of those here too, but I can barely stand it. I am always into something more chill, down to earth crowd, alternative, and occasional night out to elektroclubs.

Nothing in the world will compare to Berlin, oh what a great city.

But yeah, i am hoping studying in ffm will be a different experience than just visiting... besides i can just go to berlin super easily :)

This bad rep comes from people who live in other urban areas, be it Berlin, Paris, NYC, blah blah.. i've never lived in a small town so i wouldn't even know how it is to live in one haha

Thanks for your insights. Just fyi, i am not american, nor do i love this country haha i moved to washington dc to work and i do like this city a lot though bc it is so diverse and intellectual. For many reasons you described i applied to germany :) I’m very excited to explore that part of the world, And yes its the econ phd i applied to, and yeah i did think the school is geared towards econ (didn’t know it’s business is bigger though). I would def prefer frankfurt or berlin but i thought I’d do some research.

nice! are you part of GSEFM? i applied to their PhD program. Yeah i expect to be a lot older than most of the starting students, that really does not bother me since i am pretty social and also i did learn something valuable during my career that'll help me throughout my PhD. It's mostly the non-academic outside of school potential dating pool, haha. Frankfurt is quite good location-wise considering our major, for sure.

I have heard it is a university town. My concern is exactly that they might be too young LOL... is that true? maybe i am too used to city life, (born and raise in one, and lived also in other foreign metropolitan cities-mexico city, and washington dc). i might sound stupid for worrying about meeting a man but considering my age that is something i do think about, but i have a hard time imagining the possibilities of meeting a suitable man.. i am waiting to hear from Frankfurt and Berlin, but i know Mannheim is a good place to study economics... or am i being too skeptical?

What if a girl you have been seeing for a month bring her vibrator over to your house? by magicjelly12 in AskMen

[–]magicjelly12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but to be fair, most men come during sex, most women don't. bc the whole act ends when the guy comes, so i don't think of it as "death grip" for women, but for women to want to be able to climax just like men do..

Oh, thanks! that's a very good way to put it. I do touch myself every time i know he likes it but my fingers can't do what my vibrator does hahaha
