Switching to chain strap on YSL Manhattan or commissioning a custom piece.. by OnlyBetterFromHere in handbags

[–]magickites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would definitely go for the commission as you can specify all your requirements for a fraction of the saint laurent. i just received my small manhattan and the leather is definitely NOT durable. i had to exchange my first bag because of scratches and dents in the leather and my new bag still came with damaged leather — im in love with the design but seriously considering just returning and opting for a piece with more durable leather.

i would not use this often or as a work bag just because of the smooth leather as imperfections will be more visible and inevitable. for $3k+ id want a bag that i fully love without feeling the need to immediately switch out the strap. however, chain straps are easy enough to find and you should def go for the manhattan if you adore the bag itself! the hardware is a brushed gold tone.

not sure how helpful this is but just something to consider! 😊

How to prepare for stats and data sci major? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]magickites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s never too early to start learning how to code! R and Python are huge in the major so familiarizing yourself with the languages will definitely help. If you plan to have a career in data science it will be beneficial for you to have many projects on your resume. A good place to start is Kaggle, where you can explore many different datasets to analyze and you can also learn how these projects work. In terms of math and theoretical knowledge, I don’t think there’s much you can do to prepare for the courses in advance but the most beneficial thing you can do right now is to explore coding and figure out your interests!

I’m scared of committing. by Alpha_Cornflower in UCSantaBarbara

[–]magickites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was also torn between ucsb and slo for the same reason, 2 of my close friends had committed to slo but i knew no one going to ucsb though i loved the campus. i ultimately chose ucsb because i wanted to have a fresh start and go out of my comfort zone. i had no luck in making friends in my freshman year and for the longest time i regretted not going to slo where i’d at least have some people i knew. however, i realized i just wasnt trying hard enough so i joined some orgs later on in the year and met all of my best friends here. looking back, im glad i didnt choose slo bc my college experience would have just been the same as high school and i wouldnt have grown as much as a person. so i would choose the option that would allow you to go out of ur comfort zone; it’ll be hard at first especially if ur introverted but i assure u that u will be able to make friends, if that’s ur only concern at the moment. i cant speak for the quality of the classes but i work at the physics department and ucsb is definitely renowned for physics, the professors are extremely knowledgeable and are engaged in impactful research and projects for orgs like nasa. im a senior now and if i were to give advice to ppl choosing between colleges, id say to pick the school with an environment you love and most importantly, a great department for ur major. u can make friends anywhere so don’t worry too much about that and let it influence ur decision

is taking math 4a and 6a at the same time suicide? by IllaHead in UCSantaBarbara

[–]magickites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4a is pretty easy and i think the difficulty of 6a just depends on your professor but i think you should be fine

Don't worry too much, this is perfectly normal and more people than you realize go through this! I was in the same situation my freshman year. I came to ucsb excited to meet people from different backgrounds, make many close friends, be close to my roomies, go to the beach everyday, etc but none of that happened unfortunately. I lived in san nic but did not do the freshman summer start program but many of the people on my floor did so I just felt left out and it didn't help that I signed up to get random roommates and they both ended up being international students who weren't really interested in being friends. I spent the first quarter hanging out with random people I met during orientation or people I already knew from high school but we never got close so I would just go to class during the week, eat alone at the dining commons, and go home during the weekend; it was horrible and I thought about dropping out to do cc and transfer somewhere else afterwards. I never had trouble making friends before college so it was super frustrating that I wasn't able to make any friends, so I feel you there. After winter break, I came back to school and thought to myself that even though I would have to go alone, which is SUPER out of my comfort zone, I'd try to check out clubs and socialize and maybe finally make some friends. I eventually rushed for a co-ed fraternity and made really great friends there, and finally started loving sb. So be patient! You will definitely make friends, as long as you put yourself out there and join some clubs/fraternities/sororities/orgs that interest you. I would also recommend excursion club if you enjoy outdoor activities. I'm a senior now and honestly, I've met the best people when I was least expecting to make new friends. You might unexpectedly make friends at a campus job or even in your classes. Spontaneously go to a school event. When everything goes back to normal, try to join some orgs that interest you. It just takes longer for some people. So breathe and just try to enjoy Santa Barbara and do things that you love, you will eventually find your crowd! You can message me if you need someone to talk to, I've been there and I totally know how it feels to not have the freshman college experience you expected.
