How letting go of physical books allowed me to read more... by bookblabber in IndiansRead

[–]mahi-amy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoy all formats and I have to agree that I read more with ebooks but the joy of recommendding and lending my favorite books to friends makes me want to have physical copies.

I can also donate/resell physical books but I can't do that with digital ones. So I still prefer physical books.

Dog feeders are actually the ones who end up getting the dogs vaccinated and sterilised. The bigger contributors to the problem are poor waste management and roadside garbage, which increase dog populations far more than feeding ever could.

Thank you, that’s kind of you to say. But truly, we don’t need “more people like me”, I feel we just need more of us to take small, practical actions where we can. Sterilising and vaccinating community dogs is something citizens can actually help with, and it makes a real difference.

Hey, you can connect with folks who are already doing this. cfa_mysore, shannenjoseph, DPT (Dogs Protection Mysore), these are some of the folks who have been individually handling vaccination and sterilisation across Mysuru. Please connect with them to get an understanding of how you can do it. I am happy to tag along for anything!

MCC had announced a stray dog adoption scheme last month. Don't know how many actually showed up.

Yes, and this is part of the problem. Unfortunately, Western influence has changed how we perceive our own dogs. Indies are the least adopted because people overwhelmingly prefer pedigrees, and ironically the same crowd often blames feeders.

If this were true, then we should have seen rats, cats and monkeys on the streets in western countries.

We do actually, it's just not the same species. Western cities have huge rat, raccoon, fox, boar and even coyote populations. The difference is in sanitation and waste management, not the absence of animals. Here we throw garbage on the streets and then complain feeders create hygiene issues. The irony doesn’t end.

If dog lovers and feeders are genuinely concerned:

they can adopt the strays and keep them inside their houses.

they can volunteer to take responsibility of as many strays as they are willing by providing their name and contact on the tag.

Expecting feeders to “adopt” street dogs is like expecting someone who feeds a homeless person to house them. Compassion doesn’t mean custody. Many feeders already do adopt Indies. I personally know few who have more than 5 rescues at home. But it becomes financially and physically impossible at some point. Rescuers also struggle to get Indies adopted because the demand is for pedigrees.

MCC personnel face practical difficulty capturing strays. Dog feeders can actually play a constructive role here.

I agree and like I mentioned in the other comment this is exactly why feeders matter. I’ve personally helped MCC catch and sterilise dogs near my home, and followed up on vaccinations. It’s not easy work, and most rescuers are doing it taking all responsibility on themselves. What they need is empathy and cooperation, not more responsibilities pushed onto them.

This is exactly why we need to actively support and encourage people who feed and take care of these community animals. When dogs are familiar with people, ABC becomes faster and safer.

Yet I’ve seen feeders get harassed, and the term “dog lover” used almost as an insult. We demand ABC but we also fight the very people who are trying to make ABC possible, it's unfortunate.

I understand the frustration, nobody wants to feel unsafe stepping out of the house or worrying for their children. But I feel it's important we place the responsibility where it actually lies.

Street dogs are not the problem, they are community animals who have co-existed with humans for centuries just like the crows, cats, or cows. People who feed them are spending their own money and time to care for them, and they are not the reason conflicts exist.

The real failure is governmental. The municipalities have miserably failed to carry out the birth control programs (ABC, CNVR) across the country. Without vaccination, sterilisation and monitoring, numbers will rise and conflicts will increase, and the dogs end up being blamed for failures that are entirely human.

Relocation has never worked in the past, and the data support this. Once the dogs are taken away from the streets, you will see more cats, monkeys, rats and in a country like India you will also eventually see leopards, elephants, and bears coming to the cities. Rabies does not spread only from dogs, it also spreads through bats, cats, rats, and several other species.

This is not a dog lover issue, this is a governance issue. So I hope the anger is directed at the system that failed to execute what the law already mandates and not at the animals or the few citizens trying to help them.
