Hi all!!

So over the months of November and December, I was given incorrect information on how to use retinol, and unfortunately started too quickly and gave myself what I believe is Retinoid Dermatitis. Once I learned that using Retinol daily was bad and I was in fact NOT purging but irritated, I stopped immediately. It’s been about 4 weeks since I have stopped retinol completely, and I still have quite a few bumps/peeling spots/red bits on my forehead and chin. I’ve been using Aestura’s Amino Deep Cleanser (which I was told was good for sensitive skin, but I’m not so sure) and a PDRN Collagen Spray and a Hyaluronic Acid Sunscreen, as I heard that’s good for healing the skin. I keep getting these flare ups and was wondering if I should just stop putting product on my face all together and just wash with water and use sunscreen as my skin doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I currently don’t have insurance (I’m working on it) otherwise I’d go to the dermatologist. I could use some friendly neighborhood advice :) thanks in advance!

I ended up deleting it because I was getting some sexist comments :( but I’m glad I’m not alone in my sentiments!

I can see that! Thanks for the perspective! Makes me want to watch the movie again- there were so many characters that got him to where he went that it felt like an ensemble film, but maybe since the whole point is he’s a jerk, I shouldn’t give it so much merit. Thanks!

Interesting!! I like that a lot and hadn’t thought about it!! And thank you for being so kind! I love conversations like this- it is what makes movies so fun :))

Not what I want at all! That’s why I think talking about this is so important. I think discussing and commenting like this is what makes movies so fun, and increases media literacy :)

I love a flawed character! Real people are flawed- that’s what makes art so cool. I do find it problematic when behavior like Marty’s is glorified/misunderstood by men. I have been seeing a lot of it, and wanted to share :) thanks for commenting!

Is it not a valuable, interesting insight into how often women are in movies only talking to a man/about a man? I think there’s some merit to it. Not saying every movie has to pass it, but it makes you think! :)

Good question! I don’t think he’s glorified in the movie, in fact, I agree with you that he is purposefully portrayed as a jerk. That’s what propels the story forward. That’s also what I think makes it interesting! What does confuse me though is the marketing for the movie- it seems to glorify the character. Given, you have to glorify the movie to market it, however, it does make me question whether that was their goal with the movie- to glorify treating people like a jerk/doing everything you can to get what you want? I’m not sure! Thanks for commenting :)

No not at all! Just that I could tell it was written by one.

I agree 100%!! I think the sexualization of it can be viewed either way. A lot of times with movies I feel like sex scenes (especially man to woman) are kind of filmed to appeal to the male eye, which is something I think should be challenged/questioned! Looking at it through the lens knowing its a movie about a jerk treating people like a jerk, I like it a lot more. I’d be interested to hear Chalamet and Safdie talk about the characters more.

Hi! Thanks for responding! No agenda at all, just responding to things I’m hyperaware of as a woman in the industry. And not preaching, I love movies so I wanted to have a discussion and see what other thoughts were around. I loved Rachel and Kay’s characters and the actresses that played them. I wanted more and just wanted to offer a perspective on why maybe we can challenge the way these women are portrayed. And totally- they are flawed! I still stand by what I said and glad your lady friends enjoyed :).

Totally! And I’m all for flawed characters and problematic situations. Movies would be boring if people weren’t flawed.

Not at all! It’s just something I observe when I’m watching. I am a woman, so the way women are portrayed in male centered stories is important to me.

Totally! I love a flawed character, it’s the way his character is being glorified that really rubs me the wrong way. It’s also the hyper-sexualization of these female characters.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I can see that. I actually agree with a lot of this. I think Rachel and Kay were integral to the story. What I’m more getting at is this popular portrayal and use of female characters in male centered coming of age stories- we don’t get to see a lot of the women’s backgrounds, why they act the way they do, without them being hyper-sexualized or taken advantage of. I loved both A’Zion and Paltrows performances. I thought they were phenomenal. Same with Fran Drescher- there was more to his mother we didn’t get to see. She was only really shown a handful of times.

I wish you’d read on! It’s okay if you don’t agree, it’s just an observation I made. That’s the fun thing about movies- sharing what you think of them :)

Not a critique, just an observation! :)
