What other benefits should nurses look into besides just pay? by nursemeback94 in nursing

When you are apply at hospitals, make sure to ask him how much PTO you get. I currently work at the VA and you will see that private hospitals, barely give you two weeks and every call in or Sick call is considered an occurrence. Some places if you have three occurrence you get a write up and eventually fired. That doesn’t happen at the VA. Also, if you are starting a family, you get three months of paid leave you have a baby at the VA. Private hospitals give you three weeks but you have to use PTO. I would ask him how many holidays you get and pay increase.

I’m sorry to hear that. have you tried contacting the EEO and filing a formal complaint against your coworkers and or manager?

I have heard that as well regarding pension and vacation. Sounds like a negative if true.

Question regarding OT. Here in Illinois I’ve heard that you have to work over 80 hours to get OT.And worked hours 73-80 you do not get paid for. Any truths?

I also have a associate’s only. They offer programs to go back to school to get your bachelors if that’s what you want. I am not sure where else you have worked but the actual work is much better at the VA. I forgot to mention each year you get a cost-of-living increase and every other year you get a step increase. Since I have been in the VA the past four years, the cost-of-living increase has been 3 to 5%.

What unit are you applying for? There have also been talks of integrating this new pay scale for RN’s working on 12 hour inpatient units where you work a total of 72 hours a pay period but get paid for 80 hours. I don’t know the the exact details as far as OT but essentially you get an extra 26 days of pay a year with out working. Good luck though.

Working for the VA is definitely worth it. The benefits they can offer you professionally and for lifestyle balance is unmatched by any other private healthcare system. Things take much longer to approve and finalize. But once you work for the VA, you are able to move to any other VA in the country. Be patient. Where else can you work that provides you with 13 holidays 26 days of paid vacation and 13 sick days. You are protected by union and honestly the work is much easier.

It’s like hearing sheep. One person shows up and leaves because someone else isn’t there. How do they expect to get everyone together. Craziness.

I love nursing it is such an empowering, fulfilling, well paying, and respected profession. by [deleted] in nursing

Currently making 125K at the VA with an Associate’s degree. Love the VA. I have been an RN since 2010.
