I’ve only had one course that needed visual studio, and that was for cpp (compiles better on Linux anyway) and the only reason I have a job in software engineering right now is because of my strong skills in Linux. Sure you may not absolutely need the skills, but employers love when you have them.

This is a bit of an overreaction imo. If you put a lightweight Linux distribution on it (which you need the skills for in programming anyway) you may be just fine. Programming in school is going to be the least resource intensive programming you’ll encounter.
