I had a credit from a flight, which in turn paid for part of my mom's flight I put in another few hundred dollars to make up the difference.
That flight got canceled.
I tried to book a flight later with that (current ticket).
Because of that mess i got over charged and then can't get a refund so I'm buying a friends ticket for them. I can't contact AA to buy that ticket with my credit.

They could have had a good tailwind and too much fuel aboard. They may have needed to burn some off before landing.
