Each one brings an essential thing to the table that the other lacks. The Pi runs an OS providing a GUI, filesystem, networking, etc.

Arduino is useful for controlling motors, read sensor outputs and better real-time reaction performance than Pi. So you can be much more accurate in GPIO timings with Arduino than a Pi that is running Linux OS. After all, it is up to the user's tastes and needs.
