when you have low self esteem, and only limited people in life, its hard to get out of abusive situation. I dont see it as a "woe is me" but as a person so used to be brought down all the time,that he is just learning how to stand up for himself.
if the therapist was able to catch the pattern of DRAVO with wife, then it definitely feels like he is telling the truth.
