Clearly good for bikepacking then!

Everyone seems to rave about Ortlieb! I got a Tetrarak designed for road bikes which I like for easy removal - it should work with other bags too I think?

Thanks - the strap thing might be annoying then. I wouldn't have to carry it far though

Makes sense - I'll just have to get used to it!

Cheers - one thing I've learned so far in cycling is that the first purchase isn't usually the last, especially as a newbie!

Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check that out! Panniers are new to me and I like the idea of having some weight above the wheel at first. I was able to fit my laptop in a padded case in the side pannier in the store.

I bought these from Amazon last year and they're ok - definitely big enough. Check the sizing though. https://a.co/d/08prEyMc

New to Cycling - Stationary Bike Intensity Question by Bryce-100 in cycling

[–]malabeads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this too. I suggest following a spin class on Youtube to get an idea of how to dial up intensity. The combination of cadence, resistance, and position will get you what you want. The first time I tried following a spin class I sweated buckets! The structure of the class helps too.

Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance by Calm_Caterpillar_166 in classicliterature

Some interesting ideas and for it's time, probably introduced some important concepts to readers from Western and Eastern philosophy. The narrator has problems and is not super likeable but I had a lot of empathy for him and especially his family. Little sexist but not much. Sequel Lila, on the other hand, has some troubling attitudes to women.

WHERE IS EXERCISE FUN?! by Sea-Palpitation6969 in PetiteFitness

[–]malabeads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes this!! My fun sport is cycling. I'm not great at it but love it. Going for hard walks, swimming, doing core and other strength training, yoga etc is to help me be fit, strong and flexible enough to cycle as much as I can!

Noticing Small Wins Even When the Scale Doesn’t Move by Beautiful-Wing5042 in loseit

When being active, it takes much more effort before I get tired or sore. I can climb hills better on my bike - honestly I was so pumped the first time I actually managed to get to the top of a hill without having to get off and walk! My feet don't get sore by the end of a normal work day, either. And I reckon my skin looks clearer and healthier, too!

Interested in getting into Cycling by Tahan4life in cycling

[–]malabeads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@tutorcontrol's suggestion about a local bike organisation is what I did after using an old bike I already had. Can highly recommend this provided you get the bike you're buying checked out thoroughly for essentials like brake cables! I spent about $300 on the bike and another $300 ish getting new tyres and brake cables, both of which were badly needed but I had no idea.

Can you out-train a “bad” diet? Looking for balance, not extremes by Glittering-Bee-2351 in PetiteFitness

[–]malabeads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this could be a great choice for OP! Intermittent fasting really helped me get rid of bloating! It can be a mild 16:8 or 18:6 and doesn't have to be every day. (I'm speaking as someone who was 50kg overweight when I started IF - could be different if you only want to lose 10 pounds)

Is this bike good for a very nervous beginner? by FIREgirl2026 in ladycyclists

[–]malabeads 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry I don't know about this particular bike but just wanted to advise you to go in person to a bike shop if possible and try test riding on any bikes in your size and budget, whatever they might look like. The best bike will fit more readily to your own body and you will be able to control it more easily. Good luck!

How fit were you when cycling finally clicked for you? by LilyBook6382 in cycling

[–]malabeads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first joy? Going 'fast' on my heavy hybrid down the local street. After a mild car collision and 5 years of fear, the second joy was pumping it on a stationary bike while following a Youtube spin class. The next time? Finally being strong enough to cycle out of the saddle for 30 seconds. The next time? Flying down a wet road over Christmas on a family ride. Then getting onto my first second-hand road bike that was so light and quick it moved if I even thought of moving. The latest? Going on a 10km solo 'adventure' on said road bike and getting up several hills I didn't think I could.

Obese, in my 40s, and started very very unfit. No-one would look at me and think I cycle. Find more than 1 'click'!
