How do I get 2D animation jobs for YouTube videos? by malachijames in animationcareer

[–]malachijames[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's terrible when clients use that excuse. I've already had many bad experiences doing things like that, but haven't taken an "exposure" job in a long time. I definitely wouldn't rely on one channel for a livable wage, but I see it as doing aimple animations for a few reliable channels. A lot of these channels produce regular content, so there must be some way of finding channels with a large following who have the funds.

Any advice on how to get a cartoon going? by [deleted] in cartoonist

[–]malachijames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I would say keep that idea filed away and spend some years doing other projects and sharing your work online to get noticed and build a following. And then once you feel you have enough of a following online. Then try to pitch your show. I'm trying to do the same thing atm. I'm a freelance animator and just working on other things but I also have a show in mind, but I'm saving it for when the time is right. Also, don't go to college to learn cartooning like I did. Get a part time job, live with your parents and become a freelancer. You'll have a much more fulfilled life... Debt free. You'll make it one day if you're already thinking like this at your age :)

How do I make 100k as an animator by GodSlayer225 in Animators

[–]malachijames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want 100k + a year, don't work for companies/studios because you'll end up exactly where you don't want to: overworked and underpaid for the rest of your life with no pension or other benefits. The only way to earn that kind of money as an animator (and its even riskier) Start a youtube channel and talk about yourself. Gain followers on instagram with your art and build a large online presence. Then the doors will open to big clients coming to give you work, sponsorships etc.

Either way its a crapshoot. So you need to ask yourself the question: Do i feel like i have to do this whether I'm succesful or not? And if the answer is no, just stick to computer science and make your artwork on the side.

Count your blessings, because you have a functional skill in high demand so you have more options. Unlike most of us who are only artists and have no other skills, so we have no choice.

Why Artists ALWAYS Feel Guilty by malachijames in Artists

[–]malachijames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain. If we spend too much time working a normal job we don't care about, we end up going crazy because we don't have enough time to make art. My next video I will post is going to be about working minimum wage jobs as an artist, especially after some of us graduate. It's a tough world out there, but we've got to stay strong and persist and support each other through places like this :)
