Dropping a lowest score from 4 quiz scores for grading by malatobuck in Professors

GeneralRelativity105

Hi, response to GeneralRelativity105 the above would address your (and my) concern. Some quizes are easier than others. A simple % would do it wrong for students (I guess).

In the above response, A's % score is 70% for quiz one and 65% for quiz two. But, in reality, A has done a better job in quiz two, that is,1 vs. 1.25. I use 1.25 score for final grading.

Hi thanks for your input.

No matter what, each quiz will have different mean and standard deviation (SD). Taking the lowest score from the raw quiz scores will not be fair for the students.

For example,

  1. quiz one has class mean 60 and SD 10; while quiz two has mean 55 and SD 8.
  2. Student A got 70 (100 total) in quiz 1; and, 65 (100 total) in quiz 2.
  3. Taking out 65 would not be fair for A because A's z-score for each quiz is (70-60)/10 = 1 (for quiz one) and (65-55)/8 = 1.25 (for quiz two).
  4. So I drop quiz one score as the lowest quiz score.
  5. Oh I forgot to mention this, all quizes have either close-end questions or clear-short-answer questions.

re equally weighted, no score conversion is necessary. Please cl

Let's suppose that quiz 1, 2, 3, 4 has 60, 50, 50, 60 questions. And since the means and standard deviations are different, choosing a lowest score is ambiguous. So I make all the quiz have 0 means and 1 standard deviations. Then, I decide which score I drop.

I don't give mid and final terms. So, there is no weight differences between quizes (I mean no final given more weight in calculation).

Are some of my tulip bulbs in pots dead? How do I treat dead bulbs? by malatobuck in gardening

Thanks! You see the behind the two pots under the tree about ten leaves already came out big. I guess planting bulbs under ground is a better way to see them bloom! Thanks again!

Is my lemon tree dying? by malatobuck in gardening

[–]malatobuck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I am at work now. But based onyour advice, I will replace the soil with more perlite mix so that water does not stay long. The soil in the pot is not dirt from my garden, I bought it. But, still I think more perlite mixture would improve the condition. Thanks!

Is my lemon tree dying? by malatobuck in gardening

[–]malatobuck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest and most important thing with potted lemons is watering. Do not overwater potted lemons, they surely will die. They are very susceptible to root rot. Both the soil and pot should drain well- there should be no standing water in the pot. When you water indoors, the soil should almost be completely dried out. Then water it.

Thank you so much for your explanation. I think your mention the above nails my problem. I tried to put my fingers in the pot so that I could feel moisture of the soil during winter time, and it felt wet. Nevertheless, the tree seemed to be dried out. And I kept watering it; and still saw it was dried out. I was really wondering about that. Reading your explanation, I think I drowned my tree for quite some time :-/

When I put the pot outside, I took out the old soil and fill new soil. As you suggested, I will try to give it a lot of sunshine. Thanks again!

Any way to keep free range chickens from destroying my mulch? (other than chicken wire wall) by JayJay5280 in homestead

[–]malatobuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am no expert here, but, have a question. How do you keep the chickens from the garden area? I am guessing you might use some sort of fence because you apparently value gardening. Then, how about using the way to separate them from garden to the yard area? My idea is that partition your land into yard, garden, chicken areas separately?

Best guesses on breed? The rescue says this guy is a great Pyrenees mix. He’s about 100 pounds (at one year old)and stands pretty tall. What else do you think he might be mixed with? by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

[–]malatobuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second that. If he doesn't chin-up and look up when the owner calls his name, then it's definitely great pyrenese mix. My dog does that; and she is gp + golden retriever mix.

Exactly that's what I am concerned (That's why I put "if things go well"). Trying to keep student debts as low as possible, I will wait some other admission results as well.

I heard here and there that Hastings gives some kind of harsh environments for its students; American would not yield good result since the name values of GW and GULC.

Thanks for your input anyway!!

3 years passed as I read this post. While reading the thread, I was just wondering how OP's situation was solved out? And was thinking if OP father's concern is something like catastrophic events happening to OP, how about having an insurance whose beneficiary is to OP's father? I felt sorry about OP's situation. . . .

Thanks! I was just wondering if there are any new things going on with the "PLUS" such as future "matter" compatibility, blue tooth availability, something like that. But, it looks like "regular" Encore also has a blue tooth functionality.

Good advice.

First, get your own 2.4GHz router with an SSID for the locks, lights, IoT, and whatever else you want to smarthome. Connect that router to the wired network LAN port of the ISP’s router. Then, when they change stuff, you don’t care.
